I have the classic rust on my gorgeous 560 SCE - below the rear window under the boot lid.

Is rubbing down and filling an option as its quite severe or something more radical/expensive required.

Anyone have any solutions?

Tony.

Hi,

The cause of that rust is the rear windscreen seal - I'd replace (usually cheapest option is to have the windscreen replaced on yourinsurance policy as a glass claim, and this does not affect your no claims discount, althought there will be a small glass excess, usually £50).

With windscreenreplacement, seal and garnish moulding will have to be replaced to - it should all be covered under your policy. Do check the wording though.

Then, you'll need a decent bodyshop to repair that rear bulkhead - if it's done properly, you're looking at approx £400. It's a big job and needs to be done right - filler isn't going to be adequate whatsoever.

It's a common problem on SEC's. But once it's repaired and the rear windscreen replaced, it'll be fine.

Hi all
mines the very same. Bought a new seal and was going to take the rear window out by cutting the seal and the shotblasting the rusty areas if not totally rusted through. Then apply a rust inhibitor and numerous coats of paint. Would I be better off buying a new panel altogether ?.
Haven't had a Merc yet that didn't leak through the rear window.

Regards
Mike

Yep! Our 560 is at the workshop right now and they are fixing those areas below the rear window. They have welded in some new parts also. Use a bodyshop - a bit more money, but well worth it (if they´re good)!
