wonder if anyone can give me some advice...

i've had my c180 (facelift model '98) for 2 years. its got 108k on the clock. There are rust patches developing on 3 wheel arches, around the key hole area and at the edge of the boot. I understand that the rust on the boot lid is a common problem for the c-class. Would i be better off getting a new boot lid or getting someone to repair the rust? I intend to keep the car for a few more years (until it dies out anyway!).

Also what can i do to try and prevent further rust? Waxoyl?

Not too impressed by the paint work on the c-class, they seem to chip easily compared to the W123s.

thanks

Common problem - it may even be that MB would fix this for you FOC. If you don't have FMBSH you may find they want a contribution but they do a good job and it may still work out the same or cheaper than going direct.
I've had the boot lock rust repaired 20 months or so ago, and it hasn't returned so I assume they have got quite good at stopping the stuff these days. So I'd say you are safe having it fixed. The wheel arches may also be covered - worth a try anyway. Just had the F O/S wheelarch done under the corrosion warranty so I'll have to wait and see how long it lasts - now its going back for the sill (they forgot to do it ) and the back door (just erupted)- where will it end...Still can't complain - its been free so far.

jberks are you referring to your c220 (1995) or another car ?

cos my c220 (1995) has rust here there and a few places and i'd like to see it fixed for as little as possible

Sorry Anyweb, I was referring to my shiny but rusty 2000 E class! (Just put in my 4th claim - it's getting boring now!) The extra warranties came in around '98 so I though he may be in with a chance. Our '95 C220 goes to a local bodyshop on the rare occasions it suffers an outbreak.

Could not agree with you more.

My wife's C180K (2003) has had warranty claims for paint defects; it does chip easily and the paint is woefully thin: small scratch on door went down to primer with no problem.

But my two W123's, though not rust free, have very few paint chips on the original paintwork. The paint is original and is thick-and thats in addition to the base coats.

Says it all really.

My 2002 C200 Hatch had a tiny small bubble on its offside rear window edge, close to the door. Repaired under warranty and fingers crossed since. However the car does chip very easily I found. My 96 W210 however (before those facelifted 'rust buckets') has been in very good shape after almost ten years. Just one small bubble next to its boot release button.

Of course I have the luxury of indoor parking and decent climate.

Waxoiled or 3M rust proofing is of course a good idea. Better still if its done once a year where in the case of the UK, road salt during the winter time is a killer to the bodywork.
