Looking for advice please. My 1999 c180 estate has developed rust on the inner bottom edge of the rear boot door. It is not visible from the outside but is clear and horrible when the boot door is open.

Is this covered by any sort of MB warranty or should I get down to the local garage and buy some rust treatment?

 [/b]

The rust is probably covered under warranty but the dealer wont repair it under warranty. The warranty is full of small print to the extent that it escludes most claims. But I would get it fixed. Problem with estates is that the back door lifts salt laden water off roads and it accumulates on the rear door, particularly at the bottom. If you get it repaired a weeklywash is good.

Go down to your dealer, I've had a Boot lid replaced and my wheel arch treated under warranty and know of many more from www.mbclub.co.uk that have also claimed under warranty.
If your car was registered after Oct 98 and as long as it has been serviced by Mercedes within the last 2 years, Rust from the inside out is covered. That means things like stone chips or a scratch thats gone rusty wouldn't be covered.

Go to your dealer :!: You've nothing to lose :!:

Hi guys

I was just wondering, would the warranty cover mercs older than 98'?

Mine is a 96' and it has a very thin line of rust developing on the bottom right of the bootlid (on the very bottom edge) Would this be covered under the warranty? It has full MB Service History, the last one just 1k miles ago.

Thanks guys

Do a search on www.mbclub.co.uk for rust or corrosion. There's quite a few threads there about the subject now :x
Warranty claims have been upheld on cars older than Oct 98 too !!
Mercedes know there are paint problems with these models.
Different dealers seem to be more helpful as well it seems, Mercedes Benz of Blackpool is very helpful, probably worth a trip to be honest.
Go to your dealer, you've nothing to lose, If they aren't very helpful try another one !!
Do a search on www.mbclub.co.uk though lots of experiences there :!:

Thanks for the info!

I will contact MB tomorrow (my local dealer is in Sheffield) and ask them to have a look at the bootlid in question. They can't claim stone chip damage as the rust is in a thin line bang on the bottom right edge. Car has FMBSH so they can't get out of that, I will keep you guys posted!

i would be intrested in how you got on with MB over it
i have a e320 on a 97 and there is rust on every wheel arch starting, around the boot badge, boot lock, and now the bottom of the os rear door and the front of the rear wing near the door
in fact this is my first MB and there was less rust on my 89 5 series BM!
i have only had the car for 9 months and of course there was no rust showing when i bought it
ill see how it goes for another year but i suspect ill be going back to BM's purely from the rust point of view..which is a shame i know

I've had some bad rust problems on a nearly new 2001 SL. I noticed that many panels hardly had any paint or even primer on the internal surfaces. Particularly, I did not find any wax sealant anywhere, which is something BMW use quite effectively.

Rust and new mercedes go hand in hand these days unfortunately. Getting warranty work done...hit and miss. I have decided to keep clear of the brand from now on. Sadly. The W124 was solid - too solid hence when the Americans bought Mercedes, they needed volume sales - short term vision.

Rust - Happy Customer!

Hi all, I have just collected my 1999 T202 from the dealers - they have replaced the rear tailgate under the warranty. They have also dealt with the early signs of rust on the rear wheel arches.

I am one happy bunny!!
