I stumbled across http://www.rustmaster.co.uk/ last night whilst Googling for Waxoyl - I'm thinking of squirting some in the bottom of my doors & around the sills etc.

These guys in Harpenden (Herts) apparently have access to a 'Pro formula' & specialise in waxing cars old & new. Has anyone tried this? Pricing seems to be £300 - £450 + VAT depending on vehicle size.

Hi All

I don't recall when WaxOyl first made its appearance but it possibly predates the start of my driving career back in the 60s. I recall there were plenty of firms about that would inject rust inhibitor wax, possible WaxOyl, into cavities and box sections of vehicles after drilling access holes and plugging them when the job was done. I seem to recall that drilling holes often provided a location for corrosion to gain a hold. Does drilling still take place or has vehicle chassis and cavity design developed to the point where drilling additional holes is deemed unnecessary?

I can't say I've heard of WaxOyl Pro'. Maybe there's an equivalent product available from Frost Restoration?

I think there's quite a few rubber bungs, screw holes, creases and drain holes that you can use. I did my own using a WaxOyl manufacturer's home pressure kit and it worked a treat without drilling anything. No rusting at all after 22 going on 23 years. What a ****** mess everywhere though!

Beware of liberaly squirting waxoyl all over your car, I did this once in an attempt to halt creeping rust around the front wheel arches and sills of an E type, the waxoyl crept under the paint and lifted loads of it off, in hand sized pieces.

Doug, don't know, anyone going this route with MB Mobilife in place would need to check.

Wireman, some faulty paint adhesion there, the pressure's not that great on the home units. It's only a pressurised tin. All my experience suggests Waxoyl is inert to paint coats, (at least to the older paints).

I agree with you David, I have done dozens of cars with it and never had a problem with paint even on Etypes and other Jags

Hi Malcolm

This bears out what my bodyshop owner told me in connection with ongoing routine maintenance of the door seals and the channels in which they sit. A little bit of WaxOyl sprayed on top of the paint along the edges of the seals will keep the rust bug at bay. WaxOyl on top of paint or rubber has no deleterious effect.

Not sure what to make of wireman's little narrative though. Can you 'thin' WaxOyl to make it spray easier? I wondering if a thinner could work its way beneath paint and loosen its adhesion to the metal? Paint coming away in hand-sized pieces sounds very unlikely if it had been applied properly in the first place.

After the MB bodyshop repaired the wheel arches on my W210 they applied waxoyl in all the wheel arches so MB do use it, just not soon enough in some cases...

My wheel arches were coated too but I can't remember what was used. I recall I was invited to touch it and I remember it wasn't tacky. It had a dry, shiny, dark brown or black appearance with a texture resembling underseal, except that the bodyshop owner didn't refer to it as underseal. He did say it was superior and had self-sealing properties. Furthermore, it was a MB-approved application and I assume its use doesn't invalidate any corrosion warranty on my car.

I use WaxOyl myself very occasionally on my car and since MB use it too, they can't use it as an excuse to reject any future corrosion claims I might make. However, my Merc' is now 7 years old and there will come a point where MB will reject claims simply due to my car's age.

Waxoyl isn't goint to invalidate any body warranty and if well applied will stop the reason for a claim anyway.
Waxoyl on it's own tends to not adhere too well and can peel off due to pancaking. Mix it with some Rust Preventative Oil to make it flow and adhere better. It will give a nice even film that works really well.
