Hi all, just posting a thread here for my uncle who has recently purchased a 1997 S280.

I have had fantastic results from everyone on this site before - so here goes again!!

My uncle recently bought an S280 - full service history, well looked after with 2 owners - last one for 7 years.

Recently, it failed to move up in gear when D was selected, and also when you change manually through the gears it doesn't respond. The speedo and rev counter work fine, but it just doesn't move up in gear.

It goes into reverse, and the selector works as it should. the fault is when the car is driven it does not move up.

No lights on the dash or any other issues.

I have been reading previous posts and am going to start with the basics like the brake light switch.

Would really appreciate any advice.

Regards,

Jay

Hi Jay,, the fault should be the sensor plate gone down, and cost under £400 fitted from a good indie

Hi again malcolm,

Hope you're well.

So is the sensor plate a strong possibility, and should i start there first? Do i need a new one or can i get a used part?

Also, what is an Indie, and where do i find one.

Kind Regards,

jay

Then take the car to Jaymanic, we used to post on here a lot, he can plug it into STAR and confirm the fault, he is very good with work and prices, just mention my name

Hi All,

great news today which will certainly close this post.:D

Took malcolm's advice and contacted Jaymanic of Mercland in Nuneaton - about 7 miles up the road from me.

Very reassuring, friendly and accomodating chap - told me to pop over anytime i wanted.

Got there this afternoon and Jay had already arranged for a mechanic named Reg - Lovely Guy - to hook the car up to the Star diagnostics.

Reg did all the basic checks, ie ECU connections/oil contaminations etc before connecting to Star.

He went through the whole system clearing previously stored faults on the car.

Just to mention, Reg was excellent at explaining the whole process, which made it quite interesting, and i learnt loads of stuff!!

Got to the gear box and told me to note down the following errors -

OSS Gear comparison
Negative - Target
Gear not achieved

104 sporadically
R/P Lock Actuator

Y66/1:D

He then cleared all the faults and double checked to see if any remained on the system. All clear.:D

Disconnected the the Star and checked the gearbox level and quality.

It was nice and pink but level was low, so he topped it up with a Whole litre!!

He then told me to take it for a test drive to see if any faults arose, as they would be the true faults.

Drove it out of the workshop, up the dual carridgeway, and it felt like i was driving a brand new mercedes from a forecourt - not that i've ever done that!!:D

Drove it around for the rest of the day without any problems, before giving it back to my uncle, who was delighted!!

What else can i say but i hope this post can help others.

BIG THANKS to MALCOLM - Again - for his great advice.

Also Many thanks to Reg, Jay and Jays dad for coming round with ice cream for everyone - what a lovely bunch of guys!!!:D

Kind Regards,

Jay

This forum also put me on to Butlers in Forfar for a problem with my S280. They were great. The man to speak to is Charles Butler on 01307465898.
