S Class dash display

Hi every one, just joined the club.
Could anybody tell me if there is a warranty recall on the electronic display on the dash in my 1999 sclass.
The speedo light flicks on /off when it gets warm and a swift smack to the dash brings it back on for a few seconds.
I have taken the car to the dealers who quoted me £1256.00 for a replacement!!!!.
I have bought the dash removal tools and took the dash in bits, couldnt find any loose joints or cables,put back in and exactly the same.
Please help.
I have today found out that i could get my rusty wheel arches repaired under warranty, covers the car for 8 years, so i thought i might try the dash.
Also, has anybody had the front window auto shut on the button not hold its memory.
Both front windows work fine up/down. even auto one touch down works, but going up will program fine and even trying it a second time works. third try and the windows stop about half way up????
A lot of questions for a new boy i know,but i am hoping somebody has some answers for some of my problems, thankyou.

Hi,
I would first of all try replacing the bulb that is causing the issue, if you smack it and it comes on it usually means that the bulb is on its way.
When you have remover the dash you will be able to see the larger bulb, which are the main light, try swapping the particular bulb with one that always works and then see if the flicker moves...
If it does you know its the bulb and not the cluster itself...

The dash lights are notorious but I'm afraidMB aren't very helpful.
The S class dashes are lit by a cold cathode arrangement I believe so not just a bulb. Firms do fix them however.

There is a cluster recall in the States for 99 to 02 S Class and Cl.

Mine went out about 18 months ago, and was £800 to replace. Took about five days as had to be ordered from Germany. MB Bristol attempted to get compensation from MB, but were told that the recall did not apply to UK or any other country outside the US. I have also taken the matter up with my local dealer in Norwich who confirm the above.

I just don't know how they can get away with it as it does appear to be a very common problem.

as mentioned there is uproar in the US from this problem, and its a recall by thier road car safety authorities,

here no mention of it.

i thik they are v expensive on an s-class, plus will need star to reinsatll mileage etc etc.

bba, and i speedofixer repair them with warranty

infact bba now advertise on ebay for this.

Wow, Thanks for the fast responce.
I have today contacted mercedes in wakefield and they have agreed to replace the speedo in my dash as a goodwill gesture. So from what i hear i am counting myself very lucky. I have found some info on the s class dash on the honest john web site after doing a search on the web for electrical problems for mercedes s class.
The artical says that acording to road safety. Nightime is a problem with a flicking light on a dash and that it could be a recall afterall......I did mention this to mercedes when i rang which could have helped my case. thanks guys

I also received a phone call from the dealers 2 hours after speaking to them about the dash to tell me that they would like to carry out other recall work to include a new wiring loom for the blower fan, new door seals and a fuel pipe and to replace my remote battery, How they know it requires replacing is beyond me, but i wont complain.

i can only assume its an approved used, but i am more surprised its wakefield, the worst dealership i have ever come across in my life. dont ask!

I am a little stunned myself, Getting a new paint job, dash and a loom and the only work i have given my local dealer is a ball joint @£140.
I have heard that mercedes are trying very hard to keep customers as they are loosing to Bmw & Jaguar.....and from the service i am getting so far they got my vote.
I have had alot of different makes of cars over my years driving and yet i have not found better than a mercedes s class.

Forgot to say, I bought the car from a small trader in huddersfield a year ago and looking at the history with the car its never gone to Wakefield dealers before.

Followed one link about this prob and downloaded letter to owners in usa for recall and to dealers about recall plus much more!!!!! merc uk deny all knowlege but within an hour say they will fix for free.!!!!! For any more info just contact me.
