Hi. Recently joined and hoping to make use of your knowledge.....not sure if I've posted in the right section though. Apologies if I have. I have just purchased a 2003 S320L CDI which has the old Nokia pre-wired phone. When I look at the current S Class brochure far more phones are available. Is it just a matter of changing the cradle or am I missing something. Ideally I would like to set up an email enabled phone.....any suggestions?
Any help gratefully received.

It really depends which pre wire telephone is fitted. Mine is the Nokia 6310i, and the dealer tells me that it is prohibitly expensive to change, as it is not just the interface and cradle, but all the wiring that has to altered.

Perhaps they just did not want to do it, but they said the cost would be in thousands, so for your sake I hope yours is fitted with a more modern phone.

I doubt it will have the UHI (Universal Handset Interface) cradle fitted - these came later than 2003. You will almost certainly be stuck with the fitted handset. I had one of these and was quoted £1,250 to replace the pre-wired 6210i cradle with a UHI cradle.

There is a company in the Netherlands that will supply the kit if you want to fit it yourself. Do a search on UHI.

Why is it so important you are contactable by phone? My suggestion would be to switch it into 'silent' mode and concentrate on the driving.

And turn the radio off and don't talk to your passengers either.

How about just doing what I do, keep a Nokia phone (of the correct model for your cradle) in the car and divert your main mobile (or even your office or home phone for that matter) to your car mobile when you are driving.

You can get a Pay-as-you go SIM if you don't need to make many outgoing calls - that way you don't have to sign up to another contract.

You won't have the latest phone in the car but it could be useful and won't cost hundreds of pounds!!

I'm sure you can pick up a cheap Nokia and SIM card on eBay if you don't have one laying around already.

Works great!

Cheers.
