I have a 2001 S Class Saloon with 22,000 miles on the clock. Recently, the car developed a fault which was finally located by the dealer as oil in the wiring loom. It has taken 8 weeks (!!) and is still being repaired.

It took 2 weeks to locate the problem and identify the parts required; 3 weeks to source the parts and so far another 3 weeks to fit the "part" and solder the connections. At this rate, I will not see the car till Jan 2005.

I have not been offered a replacement during this period.

MB could problably build this car quicker from scratch !! Has anyone encountered similar problem or (lack of ) service ?

s class problem

i have an old 95 built in india s class. is the oil inside the cabin wiring loom
or outside in the engine compartment.
if its inside the engine compartment then the oil could be leaking out of loads of diffrent places and getting in th loom.
having said that the oil could just as easliy run along the loom from the engine compartment.
basicly speaking the engines the source, i cant think what the hell is taking mercs so long to fix it, apart from the appeal of draining your wallet.
i use main dealers only for some parts, hardly ever for repairs unless i'm desprate.

its a known issue on the 722.6 electronic 5 speed box that the oil seal goes, and pumps oil up the wires into the gearbox ecu - afaik the same 'box is used on the 220 series s class... and thus the same seal...

stealers arnt told this sort of knowledge, and thus take forever to find the problems... merc service is at an all time low.

Trouble is if you don't use main dealer, I am not aware of any good or decent merc independents in South Wales !!! Perhaps someone could supply a listing of such in each locality to help everyone !!
