Hi guys,

I am seriously considering buying an S Class, I've seen some nice 1997 and 1999 ones for sale. I have read on Parkers website that running costs are 'sky high'... I am on roughly 20k a year, and don't want the vast majority of it spent on the upkeep of this car.

I am looking to buy either a S320 or S420, and most probably converting it to LPG.

Could someone please tell me what servicing this car needs, the frequency and most importantly, the costs.

Also, I would like to know the full list of optional extras please.

Is there any dedicated websites to this car, offering information, etc.??

s class

i bought an 96n s280 complete with gas conversion. it was useless, on the gas setting it wouldn work with the kick down, nor would it work with the cruise control. when you pulled away from stationairy it allways tried to stall.
the gas systerm didn look like a cheap one either, so ikf you go ahead make sure you dont get the problems i had.
this is going back a 2 years but was costing me 37 quid a week in petrol and gas to run.
if its a straight six engine check the front left head gasket for signs of oil leak.
the casket is prone to leak. if you do go ahead and buy let me know cause i have a work shop manual of sorts you can have for free

Hi.
i have an S320 lwb & love it.
i would steer clear of a gas conversion, simply because its not how the car is meant to be. Indeed i have heard people say that the conversions are not what they had hoped for & a good conversion is expensive to install, & as the above post says is not always good for the car. Mine has done 160.000 miles perfect & is not that bad on juice.
At the end of the day any big car is never going to be cheap to run, but surely you know that before you buy one?
I will say though that as it is an s class unlike other mercs everything is expensive!
Mine also gets through lots of tires, although i have been told that this is not unusual.
Good luck with your hunt & speaking for myself, the S320 is a great car & the engine is pretty good for a small one.

Hi. If you can - go for a Business Edition - they have ALL the extras you can think of - and some.!!

Costs are as per MB/Indy - no more, no less than 'normal' for MB. I picked up my current UK one (65K miles + FMBSH) for £5.5K. Can't get much cheaper QUALITY than that. :D

I have an S500 coupe - not that expensive at all to run, provided you get one that has been looked after! - and goes like stink when one feels the need to burn the fuel off!
