Hello!

I have been offered a blue E220 on an S plate, which has done 120K (yow!), having no experience of Mercs, i looked on the net for the spec but all the sites seemed adamant the E220 (petrol) only existed between 85 and 95!!

So what is the spec on it? Apparently its the W124 (??) chassis, also where can I find the servicing intervals and service types??

Is it worth having?? I'm told it has stainless steel wheel arches is this normal? Or does this hide something scary normally? Where do I find the common faults with this model? Do I ask too many questions??

Hello and welcome, yes this will be a 124 one of the most liked cars on the forum.
The wing trims may be hiding something but again they may not, though a bit of rust in the wings is common but they are easy to replace.

Someone who owns one will come on with more info

Hi

S reg what is that 1998? It is most likely one of the 124's that were built after the model ceased. I thik they were built in India or somewhere like that. Have never heard any bad reports about them, come up on ebay at times usually flat colours and manual.

Thank you for the warm welcome!
I hope very soon I can become a proper member (I promise to wear a tie when i'm online) :D
Currently I own a Mitsubishi GTO with 65K on the clock and have been offered the E220 W124 as part ex. So basically dudes, is it a good deal? is 120K an acceptable mileage for an E220?
In principle is a car worth having with that mileage? It is nice no one has anything bad to say about them that makes me chuffed!

120k is fine for a 124, but like anything, service history is critical.
Do check its history carefully as by 1998, it's replacement the 210 had been going for nearly 3 years so 1998 124s are rare and were not bought through normal dealer channels. Also, as it's an oddity, it should be valued accordingly. There are many who'd jump at a newer 124 as they are very highly regarded as classics and in many ways better than the cars that replaced them. The 124 is considered the last of the old style Mercs before costs became a consideration, but it would be very hard to put a value on that as it's still an old model.
The 220 engine was a 4 cylinder 2.2 and good for 200k plus if properly looked after.
