Hi

Does anyone have experience on the S280 4sp auto box. I have a 140 shape with 72k mls on it and it has just started slipping in reverse or to be more precise it is slipping for the first 5 - 10 seconds after selecting, then it locks (as if the preasure has just got up) and runs fine. The ATM fluid was a little low but not below the marks.

Any adive / help most apreciated!!

the only reference I can find for this on the 722.5 box is the KS clutch leaky or gaskit on large intermediate plate damaged, can be done by removing rear transmission cover.

Sinse the box has to be suported with cross member removed.
I would rather go to a good gearbox specialist who would give an honest answer. I have a very good one in Exeter, chances are you live in Scotland.
It may be something other than the only one that I can find. It could possibly be code read out fault.

slipping in reverse can also be low fluid level - check this first.

(warm engine, decent drive, park, engine running, go P,R,N,D,N,R,P,R,N,D,N then chek level with engine still running.)

Hi

No, its only comming out when in a driving gear and for obvious reasons i dont want to get under it when it is in gear.

It has been taken away on a transporter to an independant Auto Box specialist. The initial verdict (from symptoms) is there is no drive cos a gaskit has gone and the preasurised oil is comming out of the box, not into the system. The oil is coming out in a spray pattern on the tarmac!

So - here's to hoping i have not cooked the box and it's a simple job of replacing an oil seal........

I will post the verdict once i have it.

that's bad luck, not a common problem, let us know how it goes.

There is a common fault with a seal on a sensor failing - it happened to me - part = 30p, oil = 80 quid... Not necessarily the same problem you have.

Is this the 5 speed electronic box (post 1996, W/S switch) or 4 speed mechanical (pre 1996 E/S switch)?

Hi

Its the 4sp box The initial report is its a circlip come off a solenoid (or sensor poss) and the oil is comming out of there. They are as we speek stripping the box to see if there is any internal damage - apparantly the circlip is £0.25p! bet the finall bill is a tad more than that!!!!

Regards
