My newly aquired S320 CDI (2000) has got a quiet rumble which is just about detectable through the steering wheel. It seems to be coming from the front offside and is intermittent. I have taken it to my local dealer, whos technician took it out and experienced the rumble first hand but unfortunately he said they need to charge me £100 for an hours exploration, as he can't be sure what the problem is. Does anyone know what the problem is and a possible cure?
Thanks,
Trev J

Hi

Is it a vibration ?
What are the conditions of the intermittency ?

Hi mattkh,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you! The noise sounds like the rapid grab and release of anti lock braking but I'm pretty sure that it isn't brake related. An indipendent mechanic has scratched his head and suggested it could be the suspension air pump rattling if it isn't mounted correctly but this will be expensive to investigate apparently. As for the frequency and conditions of occurance, it seems worse when setting of gently at relatively low speeds, i.e. it is less likely to do it if you accelerate hard and it has never happened at high speed. It has on one occasion happened while staitionary with the foot brake hard on in drive.
Thanks for showing an interest!

The air compressor pump for airmatic makes a quiet rumble, worse if the drier is full ad letting moisture into the motor. A test you could do is sit in the car as normal and raise the suspension, the pump will operate and car raise.. you could eliminate this as the problem in this way?

If it is this pump making the rumble, beware, as when they become noisey they usually fail within a year. This is not to say that yours is faulty as they generally make a low pitched hum n e way.

Hi,
I too have a S320 CDI 2001 & get the silent rumble through the steering wheel. I am 99.9% sure it is the bushes on the control arms which are worn. Before you ask, they cost an arm & a leg to replace ££££ ! You can just live with it like me or lash the cash. It will not be long before eurocarparts are stocking more W220 bits, since the new W221 came out they have started to stock more & more components.
