Hi,
I am having quite a bit of black smoke at WOT and low revs 100-1800 rpm.

I have seen that EGR valve could cause this, can anyone advise where this is located. I have attached photo

Could an air filter due for replacement cause this?
thx

Tim

Tim,

Under the manifold on the rhs as you look at the car.

Could be faulty injectors, air mass, or blocked exhaust.

There is a dial on the air filter box which turns red if blocked.

May be an idea to get your car serviced, or at least looked at by an indie.

Where are you located?

Thanks Richard.

I have just ordered an air filter as gauge was red and looked old/partially blocked when removed. Do you think this could be problem, smoky and poor pick up until about 2000 rpm under WOT

Under the inlet maniifold on RHS when looked at from front? Is exhaust gas routed around rear of engine from turbo/exhaust side ie left hand side to the EGR, if not how is it routed?

I am located in Wigan, lancs

The routing of exhaust gases is from the turbo on the LHS, through the intercooler (under the radiator) and up into the inlet manifold.

If the Air filter is that choked I'd start there. Sounds like your car may not have been serviced in a while.

These have been recommended on another forum.

thanks Richard for the local Indie contact details.

The intercooler is normally just for cooling pressurised inlet air, are you saying that it also cools exhaust gases before passing into the inlet manifold via the EGR valve.

It's difficult to see where the exhaust routing is to the EGR valve

cheers

yes in that it clarifies inlet air flow but does not show where exhaust gases enter inlet air via EGR valve.

There is no seperate intake into the EGR.

This shows the air cleaner.

Fresh air and Exhaust gases are both passed through the intercooler and into the EGR.

I's suggest that after you have replaced your air filter, if that does not solve the problem, that you consult an indie as it may be a simple sensor fault causing the mixture to be too rich.

Hmm, I've never heard of EGR going through the intercooler. Surely that would clog it up in no time.

I had a look on that site and found the EGR valve on the inlet manifold...

To me, it looks as though the EGR path is from the exhaust manifold straight back into the cylinder head through a channel at the rear of the engine and then out the inlet side of the head into a heat exchanger then into the EGR valve.

So the valve is under your inlet manifold below the raised middle part between the 2 groups of 3 inlet runners. You should see the big hose coming from the intercooler eventually going upwards to meet it, and you should see the heat exchanger bolted in to the side (closest the engine) of the EGR valve.

Hi Tim

Here is the EGR valve:

EGR Function

Located rear engine compartment on intake
• Re-circulates exhaust gases to aid in emission regulations
• Exhaust gases flow through cylinder head to EGR cooler
• EGR Solenoid energized by CDI control unit N3/9
• Hall sensor integrated within EGR read by CDI control unit N3/9, determines EGR
position and adjusts accordingly
• Re-circulated gases via EGR valve enter combustion chamber
