S320 Class W140

Hi everyone this is my first post.
I am looking to invest in an S320 Benz (W140) , with approx 70K miles and a full M/B dealer history.

This is to complement my Porsche 928 S4 SE which has no service history and cost me £6K to put right. This is a race car for the road and is hard work. I'm looking for something with a bit of prestige, excellent reliability, quiet, comfortable and something that doesnot threaten my freedom and driving licence everytime I squeeze the throttle on a public road.

What are the pitfalls of this car, if any.
Insurance is not a problem for me, but unexpected component failure is.

All and any advice would be most appreciated.

W140 - solid investment, get one with full MB service history, S320 is a fave choice of Chauffeur compnaies so watch out !

If you get one with all the gizmos - be prepared for big numbers if things go wrong eg vacuum pump for rear boot with comfort close is approx £600 + VAT + fitting ... Spares are huge numbers for the S Class range...

Buying an S320

Hi there,

I bought a 1998 S320 LIMO last August with 89K on the clock and almost FSH. for £12K (very clean).

Best car I have ever driven (even better than Bently Turbo R)

Needed some minor work - Prop coupling, stearing bushes, damper and a head gasket - total cost around £1,500. Money well spent.

Don't think that you have to always use a branded Merc Farnchise - only need to do that for service stamps in the book. All other work can be done by good independents at sensible rates. Check out the services section in the MBOA magazine.

These cars are good for at least 300K miles or more if cared for.
