I have a rattle coming from the exhaust system on my year 2000 s320 petrol.

The noise happens when the engine speed is increased.

I am told that it will be one of the cats rattling around inside its housing by a friend who was the manager of a tyre/exhaust centre.

If this is the case, is it likely the emmissions will be too high when next mot'd?

What is the cheapest way to deal with this?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

Rob

Do what I did and cut open the lower cats and take out the broken ceramic. It still passed the MOT and I know of 20 320's that have passed since.

So take out the car and weld up again, 1½ work thats all

You need to do something, either remove it as Malcolm says, or replace it. If you dont then there is a chance the dust and broken particles from the cat can be sucked back up into the engine on over run and cause engine damage.
