Just a quickie guys, when I try to open the rear passenger window I get a clicking noise when using both the driver's control & the individual door switches.

Would the general consensus be that the problem is the window motor & is it relatively simple fix?

Many thanks fellas

Chris

It could be either the motor or the regulator.

Thanks for the really quick response, is the regulator is the contraption that holds, lifts & drops the glass?

If the motor isn’t making any noise, the clicks are relays, then it is likely to be a motor fault.
According to this the motor can be removed without removing the regulator (lifting mechanism)

The regulator holds, lifts & drops the glass, the motor provides the power to do it.

Editthe above might depend on what year the car is?

Best way is to remove the door liner and check if 12v on the motor when operating the switch

I've had the door card off, it was a piece of cake with the instructions Malcolm kindly sent me, mechanically all seems in order but the motor is as dead as a Dodo.

I was wondering, can the motor be replaced with the regulator in situ?

Once again many thanks

I think that you get the new motor and see, or take the existing one off and see if the brushes are stuck

Thank you again Malcolm, will I be able to remove the motor without dismantling / drilling the regulator mechanism?

As Malcolm suggests, remove the motor and take it apart and clean everything.

The picture below is of a W202, yours will be a similar set up, the motor is still attached to the lifting mechanism but I think in your case you will be able to remove the motor without removing the lifting mechanism.

You will need to remove the 4 bolts to remove the armature cover, resistance of the armature magnets will be felt and will feel like there is a spring inside.

To remove the armature, unscrew it 5 or 6 turns, the plastic part that houses the brushes will then become free. Disregard what is written in the picture regarding…”Don’t remove the plastic part”

On the Commutator (that’s the copper segments that the brushes rest on) clean out the groves between each segments with a matchstick or cocktail stick.

Give the curved ends of both brushes a light sanding and round off any sharp corners at the curved end of the brushes.

When the motor is removed, 3 bolts I think, the window will drop down so it is important to tape the glass to the top of the door and or prop it up with a length of wood inside the door. You can drive or secure the car overnight while you await a replacement motor if the window is properly wedged shut.

I think DoctorGee, in a previous link post #4, removed the motor before he removed the mechanism.

I cant see that as being possible, you will not get to the bolts, it all has to come out as on the paper, if you take it out, you can jam the window closed with a piece of wood or from the bottom or a wedge from inside against the glass

Malcolm, According to the links in post #4 both say that the motor is removed first, without the mechanism, however we don’t know what year the car is so you could well be right.

Stonty, Before you proceed to remove the motor, try the test in picture F first here… http://homepage.eircom.net/~decdec/myweb2/new_page_1.htm
If it is the motor itself that is at fault, it is likely that you will be able to get the motor to move, if it dose move then my previous cleaning suggestion will be worth doing.
The motor in the picture was dead but I was able to get it to move as suggested in picture F however after cleaning and reassemble it now works fine but it was never put back in the car so I don’t know for sure how it might perform over time and under load.

I have just read the removal instructions and it says that the pop rivets must be drilled off.
