My 1998 S320L has developed a fault with the wiper, drivers side, extending too far on the return stroke. The mechanism seems well greased. It can be pushed both inwards and outwards. Ratchet sounds!
Can anyone offer any help or suggestions please.

I am assuming you have a single wiper similar to the attached picture, it is of a C class so yours may be much the same. The reason you hear a ratchet sound is because the coged gear wheel is slipping on its shaft, preventing the mechanism pulling the blade inwards and pushing it outwards into the corners of the windscreen. You can’t see this coged gear unless you dismantle the mechanism.

I had the same problem on my C180 and taped a lollypop stick as in picture. I used the car for some time until I got a replacement mechanism. You will loose the “in out “ action of the wiper mechanism. You won’t do any damage to the mechanism as that is already done, but you will be able to drive in the rain.

Hi Dec

Thanks but the wiper is not the single type they are double and it needs to be kept in not out.
