S500 RVM, Can anyone help????

the red light on my rear view mirror has gone, so I cannot start my car.
worse still my dealer tells me there is a 6 week delay for these mirrors GRRRRRRR, they also tell me the price is £367 plus vat.

So far i have managed to strip down the mirror and have identified the blown bulb, but alas I have no idea how to change or solder a new one on, a few people in the forum say it should work again if i do this,,,, can anyone help me please...............
thanks in advance

w140 or w220? (square or melted headlights?)

if the former - try ebay / mercman in southampton - these things turn up quite often - in fact I have one (in beige) in my office, ready for my pimpmobile project - the alarm section is redundant to me....

i dont belive that a blown LED will cause an alarm to fail - try re-setting it (zap twice quickly, key in lock, turn on, turn off, turn on, start iirc)

s500

it's a w140 and believe me I have disconnected main battery, tried key fob batteries, also the proceedure you have mentioned.

I do not have the means to disable the alarm, so in desperation I was about to try the led thing....
thanks for you response..

Hi Merv,

On the whole LED's are very reliable and last bazillions of hours (ok you can get the odd faulty one)and if this is the case then it IS possible that simply due to the fact that's it's gone open circuit could prevent your car from starting. I don't have the circuit diagram but it's more than possible the LED in question does more than one job (i.e. Look pretty and indicate something is working) Chances are it is used in a circuit and the voltage drop across it is used to feed to a chip that does clever things inside to ultimately produce a signal that says to your car 'Don't Start'.

If I were you it's worth the 5p on another LED just to try it. Your MB dealer won't and quite frankly is unable to work at component level and so will only replace the whole unit as you have said.

If you replace this item and it doesn't work you are no worse off (apart from about 5p and some time)

I hope it works for you...

Mark

P.S - Pay particular attention the anode and cathode of the one you remove and make sure the new one goes in accordingly

I can handle the cost...but the 6 weeks delay is unacceptable. From MB it is unforgiveable.
