I have used both .And i love spraying .But do it right, also i found a good paint finish from a rattle can comes out good . Non matalic colours are even better,, i used a brush to do one paint job ...wait till paint is nice a hard and then wet and dry until it is flat ..run your fingers over the paint, and if you can feel anything, then this will tell you it not ready for polishing yet ,, if its feels ok ,then start to polishing it with polishing compound first medium next very smooth to extra fine . Then a good polish .
Yeah I think painting by hand is underrated. I once used a good sable fan brush, came out excellent.

For an early car with 744 I think the Sacco panels would be Atlas Grey 7181

I did a whole car once in rattle cans in Volvo green celullose, and it was better than i ever thought it would be .Gave the body a good prep with wet and dry paper and a good wash .Next day gave it 2 coats of zinc plate primer -in rattl;e cans ..fine 1100 wet and dry,, just a smooth rub over, then wipe all over with the tack cloth to remove any dirt .Then a fine dusting with a coat of colour ,,then after 1 hour another coat all over , i did this 4 times with 2 hour intervals for the paint to harden . All outside on a sunny day .
