Over the weekend my 05 C180K wouldn't start. The dealer checked it and said that the fault was due to a defective SAM unit which had been taken up by ants.

Is this possible? If so, where could I get one online?

The car is parked under a tree at night, but never for more than 2 days. At the time it failed to start I had just driven it home from work.

I think you have a lefthand and a righthand SAM on the wheel hubs, which one ?

At least the ants have good taste, you will have to get some anti ant powder

Not sure which SAM. Dealer didn't specify. Will try to get more info.
Out of curiosity, what exactly does the SAM do?

Am I missing something here. If MB didn't build in sufficient protection against such events, surely that's their lookout. Surely this is a quite common issue in hot climates. Shouldn't they be replacing this under warranty?

SAM means signal acquisition module, this signal is used and sent to other parts of the car for monitoring safety features as fitted to our cars.
Hope this helps a little.

Thanks for the help guys. Unfortunately this does not seem to be a problem specific to MB. I spoke to someone who has a Toyota SUV and they had the same problem. Apparently, there is some glue or other substance that they put on the component that attracts ants.

I was also looking at the terms of the warranty on the MB UK site, which I figure would be almost the same as the one offered in JA and they don't cover things of this nature. Although they didn't specifically mention ants.:)

I am trying to get the part no to see if I can bring in the part myself, which tends to be much quicker than going through the dealer.

These things have to be what is legally termed 'fit for purpose' If ants are a naturally and entirely foreseeably ocurring event/hazard then the problem lies with MB. You are clearly using the vehicle as intended by the manufacturer and as such they have no escape clause. You may just need to get tough with them.

I guess it's no different from mice getting and eating the wiring, which you hear about quite frequently in the UK.

Although it does seem somewhat negligent to be using a glue which is known to attract ants.

I should be getting the car back on Tuesday evening and they have agreed to fix it under warranty.

Got the car back, feels smoother than ever. But I have to take it back as the cornering feature for the foglights doesn't seem to be working. Also the fogs don't light up when car opened as before.

You should be able to set those features in the convenience menu - unless they've fitted an older version SAM.
