well i posted about a week ago about a noise i was getting from the front of the engine as if something was loose when idling but when revved the noise goes away, anyway i thought it was the water pump, this is how the story goes...........

the car is covered by a 12 month warranty so i phoned the company who told me to take it into a garage where they will diagnose the problem phone the warranty place to get the go ahead to do the work, no problems i thought
so booked my car in and took it to the garage last monday and i was faced with a bunch of greasy haired spotty faced kids, not one to judge i thought give them a chance, they had the car for literally 2 minutes and came back picking the noses and scratching arses saying "yerr we fink its da war'a pump" then goes on to say they dont think its covered because its not actually broken or leaking, i argue to say im telling you theres a problem in advance so i dont get stuck miles away from home with a knackered water pump, they said theyd ring me but never did

anyway took it to my local mechanic (been there with all my old cars) who immediately diagnosed the fault as the tensioner he wedged a crow bar between the tensioner and the block and the noise stopped, so ive bought the part and the car is booked in for this friday.

the only thing is......i noticed today that attached to the tensioner is a damper and according to this site......

http://www.thebenzbin.com/mercedes-accessory-belts.html

.......this is the problem, and i got to thinking when the mechanic used the crowbar it put a little pressure on the damper stopping the noise, is there anyway of checking for this to make sure its the damper and not the tensioner or the other way round??

phew over and out

On my old 98 C180 the auxillary belt tensioner failed the same but mine did not have the damper arrangement fitted to it so I purchased the new tensioner from MB, fitted it and the noise was worse, went back to MB and they said it has to have the damper fitted with that tensioner so I fitted it and it was fine. I would view the tensioner and the damper as one part and change them both, I think mine were about £90 for both the parts using genuine MB parts, easy to fit as well.

I remember the problem. I think I suggested the belt damper in my post. The damper is nearly always the cause not the tensioner.

Some of the C180 did not come with dampers but were only available as a replacement with a damper.
