Same wheels, bigger tyres?

I have a w210 with the 11 spoke 16" alloy wheels on it. It is fitted with 215/55/16 W rated tyres which seem hard to get. Does anyone know if you can fit 225/55/16 to these wheels? (seems to be more choice in this size).

Many thanks.

...You should have no problems with such a small increase in width and profile, I'm presuming it's the tyres fouling the suspension components you are concerned about. I've just used the link below to calculate your extra 10mm in width and 5mm in profile means you will be travelling at 71.2 mph when your speedometer shows 70 mph. If you want to check it yourself go to the section named "Tyre Size Calculator" 1/4 of the way down page 2 and fill in your details.

BamBam is right - though you'll probably find that normally when the speedo reads 70, you're doing more like 65, (all speedos underread) so this change will probably just make it more accurate!

I did the same thing on my V70R my speedo is near enough so as not to be any problem and under reads at 2 mph at 70

Isn't the profile staying the same 55 here or am I missing something?

its only that 55% of 225 is more than 55% of 215, its very little

Thanks

Thanks for all your advice. Will the 225 tyres affect the cruise control and speed limiter?

Another point to consider - I replaced 185/70/14 tyres with 195/65/14 tyres on same wheels on my Toyota Camry sedan. Same circumference etc so speedo not affected. Found car to be far less "planted" on the road. Moved around more, more steering corrections necessary etc. Not as comfortable to drive. Wished I had stayed with original factory proven size.

Did 185/65/14 -> 195/60/14 on my Vectra no adverse affects - ran pressures slightly higher afterwards (actually looking at oigle symptoms - the first thing to try would be higher pressures)

On a similar point I was wondering about 205/55/16 -> 255/50/16 on my C240 sport - anyone know if this will cause any problems (radius in the same). May not do this as 205/55/16 seems to be a very popular size and 225/50 less so - so the price jump to 225/50 is about 75%!!

Had done just that - increased tyre pressures by a couple of pounds. Did help but still seems to me that car "moves around" more on the wider tyre on the original rim. There is more "belly" in the tyre and thus more sideways slop - I feel that a slightly wider rim would be the answer but don't want to go to the extra expense for the "shopping buggy".

Personally I don't find it difficult at all to find tyres in 215/55/16 size.

The biggest problem I find is that most high street retailers don't stock tyres in anything better than V rated.

I tend to use those companies which allow you to order online, they also happen to be a damn sight cheaper too.

Whatever you do DON'T be tempted to fit tyres of a lower speed rating. Moving from the recommended W (169mph I think ) rating to a more available V rating (149mph?) might not seem much, but it can and in the experience of a friend has been used as an excuse for an insurer to not pay out if you have an accident.
