Father Xmas has told me that he will be giving me a super dooper SAT/NAV, Speed camera alert and MP3 player as a single package, which will fit nicely in the position now occupied by the removeable ashtray on my E Class W210

As it will be discretely sited behind the "flap" which covers the ashtray and cigar lighter, I am hoping that it will not be nicked by chancers.

Because it will be installed into that area, it will require a remote (internal)aerial. My current speed camera detector works well in the forward part of the windscreen area, picking up GPS signals faultlessly. The first question for the forum is ... has anybody installed a GPS aerial in an E Class. Does the whole dashboard assembly have to come out or is there access say via the glove compartment?

Secondly as the device is also a MP3 player, where would be best point to pickup connections to speakers?

Finally the whole lot costs apparently about 300 squids

Am currently trying to work out how to fit the unit into the ashtray on my w210. Once this is done I will tell all, and once I have some idea as how to plumb the unit in the MB wiring

From a safety issue I feel it will be to low down, the Commands placing is bad enough. Volvo normally one step ahead on safety allways have thier's in the top of the dash and that is the only place where you can see the road at the same time. For the best part one does not need to see the screen, but at complicated junctions you do. I am also very fussy about the ascetics, not easy.

I've just replaced my Audio 10 with an APS 30 which includes Sat Nav and had to fit a sat nav aerial. In my W210 I found that the simplest access to under the dash was by removing the glove compartment. Only a few screws to remove and it comes out quite easily. You need a very short screwdriver to get out the screws in the top of the glove box. I managed to stick the aerial under the plastic dash, in the centre, close to the bottom of the windscreen. It picks up 4-6 satellites most of the time. However, I can't complete the installation as I cannot identify the correct cable that carries the speed signal to let the unit know that the car is moving. It thinks it is still on my driveway when I've travelled miles. If anybody can help with this speed signal issue I will be very grateful.

Televisions comment is correct but the vision is way better than say a radio/satnav (APS30 etc) because the unit is about 40 degrees off vertical replacing the ashtray. It is certainly a lot better than say the BMW iDrive. The system does voice commands so actually looking at the unit is not essential. At least it is out of sight when not in use
I regard this as a better compromise than say a "portable" system which tends to be left in place, and then stolen at vast cost to the car - usually the repairs cost is 3-4 times the value of the unit (Northumbria Police)
Cleggyw210 asks about the speed signal and I am sure that I read a response to precisely that problem a couple of weeks ago on the forum - suggest you do a search - the passenger footwell comes to mind, but dont quote me

The GPS needs to "see" the sky for its Arial to work. So you need to give it a clean line of site, eg on the top of the dashboard with some duct tape. You couldf buy a mount and mount it, then unmount it and stick it in the glovebox?

Not when you are using an external antenna

My experience is that these little GPS devices have an intenal Arial. Some have a socket for an external (to the device) one. These tend to be expensive and hard to find, in comparison. I hope Santa is able to source it though.

Thanks Bumper and Dogsbody - I've read all of the info regarding the speed signal wire and have exposed all of the wiring in the footwell. I can't find two green and black wires soldered together. I was hoping somebody might have another suggestion as at the moment I've got radio and CD but no Sat Nav.

Thanks

Peter

This model has provision for an external aerial, which costs £25 including 1.5 metres of cable and gold plated plug. The external aerial will be external to the GPS unit, but placed on the dash at the front of the windscreen area, where the satelites are clearly received on my existing camera warning system - will install it next weekend of weather OK

Made several mistakes here.
After fitting the unit, let "her indoors" drive.
Sat Nav said " You are exceeding the speed limit"
Her Indoors "I always drive at this speed on this road"
Solution switch to MP3 player part of the sat/nav and play "Road to Hell" by Chris Rea.
I have not told her yet that I can switch off the Exceeding speed limit message

Hi Bumper

In the passenger footwell (remove the plastic trim from the door sill and the sort of triangular trim in the footwell - one screw) and you will find the trunking for all of the cables. Pull the carpet up and open the trunking. Down at the bottom you will find a green and black wire joined by black fabric tape to a green wire. Take a feed frothe black and green wire to the correct terminal on your sat nav.
