You are not going wrong. COMAND will only accept 5 digits for postcode.

The reason? In Germany they only have 5 digit codes! :)

Yes and France. Maddening MB have not addressed this simple to fix issue. I now use a Garmin which is better in so many ways (including showing speed cameras and mobile speed units, and being easy to update on your home computer). Not being plumbed in as part of the fixtures and fittings is the only real drawback.

That explains it! Which is why it then asks for a street name to pinpoint the destination. But I found the same problem in France with Garmin, you need to insert a street name before it will calculate the route. But having done that it will get you there precisely.

If you do not know the street name, and have to guess, be careful of what you wish for! :???:

That is because only the UK has a postcode system covering only one street. In Germany, France, Sweden etc etc a postcode can cover perhaps 10 streets and some addresses.

In the UK the Garmin takes the full 7 digit postcode and works perfectly.

In France we found it gets you pretty close from the postcode but ideally likes a bit more info to be spot on.

One of the great things about satnav is to go for a drive way out in the country, purposely get lost just enjoying the drive, knowing that satnav will find you the way home.

Yes I have done that :D Coming home this morning from Hasselmere to Lyme I just used a Torquay setting that was on the screen as thats just further down the road form my place and I saw it was 300 mile when it was 125 going there,,looking at the map she wanted me to go up the A3 onto the M40 and down the M5 so do take a look at the map after the route has been found

Wow. Was that COMAND. I had a couple of 'funnies' like that with COMAND. Not had yet with Garmin but I agree a map check is always a good idea.

Tom Tom is much better than COMMAND. My boss has a 2006 CLK320CDi - nice thing, rubbish sat nav. Can't do postcodes past for example LE1 7?? and has many street names missing.

My Tom Tom 510 can do all this plus has much better mapping.

I can find anywhere. He can't.

I agree. I find my Garmin better than the COMAND I had. Full postcode entry and easily updated on my computer instead of with a £250 disc. Plus all the safety cameras and sites for mobile cameras.

Pity Germany does not have 7 digit postcodes; then COMAND would take full UK ones.

It also cheaper at £99 at Tesco, the 300T model but the downside, it not integrated like Comand.

Another function on the Comand that beats them all is the turn now feature.

If you are at a multi juntion with a few rounder bouts in succession, and sitting in stop start traffic,,the after market units say turn left in 300 meters. Thats fine but how far is 300 meters in the dark, and in stop start traffic, if you take the wrong left then you could end up on a motorway with a 20 mile trip to get back to where you went wrong. With the Comand she says turn left now, at the exact point and you have the baragraph as well,, this is the difference to using real maps as apposed to satellite

My Garmin gives a "Turn Now" command at the junction, even gives an "Exit now" when on a roundabout.

Don't understand your comment - "this is the difference to using real maps as opposed to satelite" - All Sat Navs work on the same principal, the receiver contains a map database to calculate where to go and a satelite receiver to calculate where it is.

They do not all work the same way, The Comand is more accurate as it uses the actual road that you are on, Satellite systems do not, its as simple as that

I don't understand that Malcolm. They all use maps and all use GPS (global positioning by satellite) to precisely locate where on the map you are, don't they?

COMAND also uses the speed pulse to more precisely time instructions.

Mine always says it slightly too late - it's partularly noticeable on roundabouts.

Quite bizzarely, if I drive it around the roundabout outside my dealer, then it works perfectly.
