Hi & Welcome,

I believe it is up to version 8 now for the CLS/E class DVD however I'm not definite on that. I have V5 with TMC and basic postcode search, I don't know if V8 has full 8 digit postcode search although I doubt it.

I believe that Alfie at Comand.co.uk is now able to sell genuine CLS/E Comand disks and he will be able to advise you what they offer.

I'm glad I don't have Comand for Sat Nav. No proper post code search, no speed cameras so not worth a jot in my view. :(

I had COMAND on my previous car but now have a Garmin Nuvi 660 which I am sad to say is in many ways much better. Full post code, fixed and mobile speed cameras, and you can just plug into your computer with a USB lead and update via the Garmin website.

I know what you mean, it is still a great piece of kit though with no messy wires and the instructions in the instrument cluster as well as a nice big screen. I wouldn't pay ~£2K for Comand however I wouldn't not want it either.

I agree that the advantages of a built in system are worthwhile. I am just completely baffled why Mercedes do not make their system as good as the cheapest Garmin. Why not full post codes? It is simple software. Why not make it so owners can update via computer? Why is it £2,000? Why is it £250 for a new disc every year if you want to keep up to date. Bizzarre, antiquated and totally unnecessary.

And why not offer one version where we can just plug in a Garmin or some other make suited to MB?

To be fair though these issues are not just limited to Mercedes Comand they are pretty much common to all OE fitment Sat Nav systems.

Regarding full post codes, I believe the UK is the only location with more than 5 digits, so they will not invest in a modification for the UK alone.

Regarding the other questions, its all about profit. If they reduced the price to £500 for example, assuming the unit costs them £250, they would need to increase the sales by 700 % to achieve the same margin (£1,750 profit from 1 x £2,000 unit).

The same for the discs, they know that if you have a £2,000 nav unit installed, you will want to use it. It probably cost them less than £10, making something like £240 profit per unit. If they sold the disc for £50, they would most probably sell additional units, but they would need to sell 600% extra to make the same margins.

As long as we keep buying them, I don’t think we will see any change.

I do think having the ability to add something like Road Angel software to the system would be a big hit. The one thing a miss from TomTom is speed camera warnings. Saying that, I needed it in my old M3, my driving is not so aggressive in my E Class !!
I have just added the iPOD integration kit at £380, must be made.

Having it built in is worth a lot, I enter the 3 digits the enter the number of the house in the road list

The little bar that tells you when to turn is perfect unlike stand alone system that say turn left in 50 yards,, how do yes estimate 50 yds when there are 2 roundabouts together.

And it does other things a well (Cockpit Organisation Module And Navigation Device)

But I do agree it shouldn't be too difficult for MB to integrate some sort of update system, speed camera database etc..

Then again I wouldn't swap mine for a TomTom/Garmin/Road Angel

I've just had the iPod integrated into mine so have no loose wires at all now :)

Just like to get a reversing camera into it and I will be sorted.

I believe it should be possible, I would like it to automatically come on screen when you select reverse. I've asked Alfie just not heard back from him as yet. I know it is an option on S class now so as long as you can show video on the Comand I cannot see why you cannot get a reversing camera picture displayed. I also understand the picture doesn't switch off when your reversing so that shouldn't be an issue either.

Modern systems are quite sophisticated. They tell you exactly when to turn, give you plenty of notice and handles double or triple roundabouts with no problems.

Any system that can guide you around the Magic Roundabout in Hemel Hempstead is good! :)

I'll have a chat with Alfie when I see him next :)

As long as you have AUX imputs on the Comand any camera would do.
