I'm about to have a satnav system (Pioneer AVIC-X1) put into my 2001 E320CDI estate and have a couple of questions:- (I've looked on these forums but am still a bit confused)

Speed pulse. My current understanding (it changes each time I search on the web) is that my car uses a CanBus system to transfer info around the car and so doesn't have a speed pulse signal in the required form and requires an adapter to extract that info (around £100).
However, I believe that the Audio10 system has an increase-volume-to-match-car-speed feature and so an adapter may already be present and I should look at pin 1 on the ISO connector? Is all this correct?
(Incidentally I had never heard of this increase-volume-automatically feature and it isnt mentioned in the audio manual but I was travelling at a constant 90mph on the motorway and the volume suddenly started increasing to maximum! I thought the speakers would exploded - frightened the bejesus out of me and I nearly crashed the car! As far as I know, the volume has never changed on its own before and it hasn't done it since)
Another possibility is something I found in a document referred to on these forums somewhere. They mentioned a 'G' class mercedes but I've not heard of these (not that I'm and expert in these matters) and the engine sizes were the same as 'E' class and so I've convinced myself there was a typo. It said that for 'G' class cars with an external temperator sensor, the was a green/white cable at the rear of the speedo, lower part, which carried the signal. Am I barking up the wrong tree here?

GPS sensor - Ideally I could have this placed under the dash somewhere but that replies on the window not being metallic. I have rain-sensitive wipers for intermittent mode but the windscreen doesn't have a blueish tint (which I read was an indicator). How can I tell for sure?

All help gratefully received.

Speed-Pulse.
The only way to know for sure is to check pin 1 on the rear of your existing Audio-10. If there is a wire here, then your car already has the adapter and all is OK. It just takes 10 seconds to pull out the radio (MB Radio extraction keys needed-£5 from MB dealer) to have a look.
(The volume increase function- GAL- on the Audio-10 is changeable through its service menu, which is accessible by pressing a special combination of buttons.)

G-Glass
The G-wagen (4 wheel-drive cross-country vehicle) is not the same as your car and it's only on vehicles with mechanical speedometers (cable driven) that you need to look at the back of the speedo for the electronic (hall-effect) speed pulse transducer.
Look at this table instead:
http://www.siemensvdo.com.au/files/502527_Vehicle Speed Pulse Locator Nov-2003.xls

Your speedometer is electronic (CAN-bus) and you will not find the speed-pulse signal here. The engine type is not a guide and neither is wire colouring as wire colours (for these type of signals) are, unfortunately, not standardised across all car models

Antenna
It sound as if you have the standard windscreen, not metalised, but even with this you will need to experiment when placing the antenna under the dash. Ideally it should be located as high up as possible, close to the dash surface in the middle of the car and away from any wiring or metal objects. Your GPS system will indicate how many satellites are being recieved and you may need to experiment to find the best position. Do this before inserting the new radio.
