Polishing - Save £££'s on Meguires Clay bar!

I bought a Meguires detailing kit today, consisting of a clay bar and the spray lubricant that goes with it. While I was in the shop I thought I might as well have the Meguires wax as well as I had heard so many good reports of the clay bar/wax process.

Got home frome the footy, had a bite to eat and thought about trying it out on the boot lid of my Azurite blue Eclass. Wow, the results were amazing, Ive never acheived such a depth of shine with conventional waxing, I was very, very impressed!

Then it dawned on me where I had seen/felt something similair to the clay bar - it was Blutac!

So, as an experiment, I tried it out on one of the door shuts, a slab of Blutac replacing the clay bar and regular window cleaning spray as the lubricant - it works! The blutac removed as much residue as the clay bar and left the same glass like finish, it even feels the same in the hand as the Meguires clay bar. Then to finish off I used my regular Turtle wax polish, the results were just as impressive!

Happy that I was not going to do any damage, I tackled the whole bonnet, the resulting shine was every bit as good as that on the boot lid!

The Meguires stuff cost me £25 this morning, the blutac, window spray and Turtle wax were just lying about the house.

Try it for yourselves and post your findings here. Tomorrow I will try some more and post some photo's.

As I said, I used plain old window cleaning spray, feels the same in use as the Meguires lube, only difference is it evaporates quicker so its better to do a small area then buff it off with a clean cloth before it dries. Try it on a door shut first or better still the Wifes car before you attempt it on your pride and joy!

Blutac works just as well, I have both, its more or less the same (clay is more sticky).

You should use a wax for a lubricant though, it saves time applying more polish after claying.

There was a short discussion about this on another forum...

This is from a guy called L200_Steve on the Detailing World forum,

'Detailing clay is a mixture of soft adhesive flexible butyl rubber and a mix of same particle size abrasive, such as kaolin clay (talc) There is also a small percentage of synthetic detergents.

The soft butyl rubber ensures that non of the abrasive particles can protrude from the main body of the clay bar, and cause scratches (in theory), by being absorbed flush into the butyl rubber.
It also moulds itself to the vehicle bodies contours, ensure that you cannot apply too much pressure to one spot.

When the clay goes over a peak (contaminant) on your paint, the abrasive particles 'sheer' off the peak, and the loose peak is encapsulated by the clay.

The larger the size of abrasive, the more aggressive the clay, the harder the contaminant you can remove.

If the clay is hard, from it being cold or old, the contained abrasive particles are unable to fully retract into the butyl rubber, and you cause marring.'

Another guy said, 'Blutac is 'too kind' and will not remove any ingrained contaminants which is the whole point of claying.'

Its true - honest!

I wasn't suggesting it wasn't, sorry if I gave that impression. I just think it's great when an expensive product from a quality manufacturer turns out to have a dirt cheap alternative! I shall certainly be giving it a try, I very nearly bought a Maguiars Clay Kit yesterday morning, how's that for a lucky save of £22 to Halfords :D :D

I tried using the Blutac with wax as a lubricant, its nowhere near as good as the window spray, it "grabs" at the paint surface and seems to slightly disolve the blutac, I guess that this is due to the solvent used in the wax, I think most waxes are parafin based. When using window spray it feels identical to the Meguires lube, a slight grab at first as the blutac picks up the dirt and contaminants, then it glides over the paint surface in exactly the same way. I'm convinced that there is little difference between the two products. the only difference I found is that the Meguires wax is slightly better than the Turtle Wax Nano Extreme that I used.

Try it Guys, it really works!

Seems like I'm not the first to recognise the similarity between clay bar and Blutac, try Googling "clay bar blutac"

Like I said, the blutac grabs at the paint if you use wax as a lubricant!
