Hi, iv had a service brake! light come on a few days ago on my dash. I got it diagnosed and the current faults was shown: SBC Sensotronic Brake Conrtol - C254E Hydraulics fault and C249F (SBC hydraulic unit). I have been advised that this hydraulic unit costs £827.00 + VAT and that my brakes wont work once the red warning lights come on.

However when i came home i did a search on the internet and noticed that there was a recall on something to do with SBC control unit for cars from 2002 onwards.

my car is dec 2003 (53)plate and chasis no: w211.

I spoke to mercedes and they say the recall is on the brackets and not on the sbc unit. Is this correct?

Please help me!!

Book it into a dealer and you may find that they will repair it for free as there are many SBC problems out there.

Hi there, it seems I am facing the same problem and would appreciate if you could inform me of the outcome of your case.
Did you eventually taken the car to MB??, have they changed the SBC for free or you were charged?

i think an awful lot of reading would be required there, Alfie! at least you got the correct result in the end though.

It does seem that some cars are getting the pump changed free,,while others have to fight. Those in the USA are under a 10 year guarantee

but surely if they offer that warranty in the usa, and the parts used are the same as here, the faults are the same, surely we should get the same warranty? or is it perhaps because of the american culture to sue for every little thing thats got MB scared to not offer the warranty over there, i wonder?

In the USA they have the Lemon laws that forbid the manufactures from passing the buck

I have a 2003 SL500 (purchased 5 months ago). I had my car serviced at a main dealer a week ago (60,000 miles) and the dealer replaced the pump, flushed through the system and replaced the fluid. I was told that this was a free serviceable item and I wasn't charged a bean.

A diesel
SBC failure should be covered by Mercedes.

Quickly ring up your nearest MB dealer and quote VOSA recall R/2005/135 or campaign P036 and 037 and get it done for free. If they ask you why it not regularly service with them, make up anything you like, they still have to do it for free.

In the first instance it a good idea to let them service it regularly if you can afford it so they may update your motor.

Don't forget to get the auto pilot bush done too if it is not included in the do do list.

If you are located in major cities like London, Manchester or Birmingham even better with MB direct.

What's this

auto pilot bush

This is the pilot bust on the side of the gearbox where they can leak and the fluid from the box gets into the box ECU

TBH the vosa recall is irrelevant - as has been discussed. Yes they will replace it FOC provided maintenance like the 2 yearly brake fluid change have been done (not necesarily by them, just so long as its in the book) and they'll probably replace it FOC even if not.
Mine is also a 2004 E270 and mine was replaced FOC 2 weeks ago. No arguments, no quoting the riot act, I asked the dealer to check it whilst it was in for MOT as I hadn't had any warning but figured it couldn't be too far off (they do a free MOT, but all servicing has been done elsewhere for a few years now) and they rang me back and said they were fitting me a new pump. My total bill for MOT, SBC replacement and a loan car for 5 days was £10.
The pilot bush is normally done at the mandatory 45,000 mile gearbox oil change (mine was anyway) but its worth confirming it has been done.
