What your opinion ?

A good thing or a nuisance.

For those who don't know what it is, it Senstronic Braking System, an enhancement to ABS but for maintenace it a nightmare. If you are not careful you may get injured and your hands crushed.

To change brake fluid or brake pads, it needs SDS(star diagnostic system). Is there any aftermarket we can buy one? Heard someone was talking to Malcolm about using one.

Funny enough Merc are withdrawing it from new E-class, so it must be too expensive or unreliable.

Is this a Merc device or Bosch?

SBC was a joint MB-Bosch venture that got hurried through in 2001 for the launch of the 230 and 211, it stayed with the 230 right up to this year when it was dropped for the new model, the same on the E class, where it was dropped last year.

There was no room in the 211 or 230 to modify to any other part conventional system.

Apparently lots of SBC pumps get changed without the cars owners knowing this.

Working on it like many other things you have to observe the safety requirements or it will bite you.

EBC has now taken its place so that things like Distronic can still be used

The idea was good and it works really well, but it's a bit noisy at times and there were reliability issues. Safety wise, disconect the batteries before messing about with it and you're safe.
The safety features like auto dry plus the ability for the car to operate the brakes for you (something they can now do with more conventional systems) is great for speedtronic/distronic etc.

Wonder did it happened to anyone, the SBC lockup and unable to move the car?

The more technologies are added, the more problem will be the car.

Never heard of this ever,, the pump would have to be running the whole time to do this

The pump stopped after you switched off the engine and what if the brake fluid doesn't return back to the reservoir.

Is the EBC any better and which models will I expect to be in? The current new E-class or R171?

The pump is on the wake up circuit therefor always live and the brake fluid never leaves the reservoir

Unless the aux battery also run flat. Does the main system battery anything to do with the SBC.

I heard noise at the front when SBC operating. Is it just the front wheels or all four?

If SBC is such a disaster fitted to W211, 230 and 240, is there a way to get rid of it or disable it and still be able to drive the car?

No thats impossible as there is no vacuum boost, only the electronic SBC pump

Been looking at SDmedia, it still experimental fitted to 211, 230 and 240. A lot of parts need replacement if faults developed and common. Cole the expert.

The SBC pump is now guaranteed for 10 years.

Yes, Free replacement

I have a 2003 SL500 (purchased 5 months ago). I had my car serviced at a main dealer a week ago (60,000 miles) and the dealer replaced the pump, flushed through the system and replaced the fluid. I was told that this was a free serviceable item and I wasn't charged a bean.

I personally think it's a brilliant system. Hyd pressure is charged to about 2500psi on start up and the 4 computers control the amount of braking that is applied to each wheel. I've never had a problem, touch wood, and it seems to be very reliable. SBC hold is a nice touch too and wouldn't be without it.
