Scored some new wheels!

Hi all,

Ok, not exactly new but a little more fashionable than the old ones.
I have a set of 7.5J x 16" OEM Avantgarde alloys from a 1998 E300 TD which I plan
to have refurbished and fit on my W202, replacing the rather old fashioned looking 'coke bottle top' looking wheels I currently have.

The PCD and offset are ok, along with caliper clearance and bolt length. However I have one small question for all you knowledgeable forum buddies out there:

Current tyres are: 195/65 VR15. The AG alloys have 215/55 V16's on them (in various states of wear).

I plan to purchase new rubber all round, the tyre calculator states that:
215/55's will be 9mm larger than the current tyres and 205/55's will be 2mm smaller. Can anyone advise on the best choice?
I believe both sizes will do but I can't decide.

Thanks in anticipation, DoverSole

John,

IMHO, as the 205/55's will already be 2mm smaller as new, then when they wear down, they'll only get smaller!

Go with the 215's.

Having said that, I have 205/55-16 on the front, and 225/50-16 on the rear..

On 15" wheels the 195 65 is correct

with 16" it depends on the J section width, and they are 7J for the front and 8J on the rear if staggered. On all MB 16" 7J the tyres should be 205 x 55 x 16 and on the 8J they should be 225 x 50 x 16

Hi,
I'm running Goodyear NCT5 215-55-16 on the front and the same size Michelin Pilot Primacy on the rear. Having run the car over 30K with this set-up my conclusions are that the Goodyears are equal to if not better wearing than the Michelins, The Goodyears are good for around another 5K. Grip and wet weather performance and front line stability are also good.

I can recommend this tyre for the E class but as the C class is a lighter car Pirelli P6000 might be a better bet, won't last as long but you will get better grip.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Guys, for the prompt response!

Appreciated.

It would appear 215/55 V16 is the best size to go for. I will be looking round for new rubber after the wheels are refurbed,
hopefully the DoverSole exchequer can find some money in his turnups!

I have actually considered Eagle NCT5's, along with others.

Many thanks again, John (aka: DoverSole)

Hi all,

An update - wheels will cost £170 to completely refurb, this includes stripping and refinishing the whole wheel. JP Polishing on Canvey Island.

Tyres are going to be Hankook Ventus Prime 215/55 VR16, all up including vat and postage £254.

Looking forward to fitting them, i'll post some pictures when I do.
