Screeching noise upon starting engine

Hi all,
My 190 has started screeching but only when starting from cold and usually only on a damp or wet day. The problem is getting worse/louder and more regular though and as I do a lot of 250 mile motorway journeys I'm worried something is on its way out. I'm convinced the noise is coming from the belt/pulley/pumps region. It isn't the alternator itself (maybe bearings) nor a loose fan belt. Has anyone else got an idea what it might be? Thanks in advance.

Steering or water pump bearings? Tensioner? Any obvious play back and forth in either? May have to remove the belt.

If its only really occuring at startup (and enhanced in the wet), then I'd suggest its a loose alternator belt. The period just after starting places the highest load on the alternator, because its recharging the battery just after its started the car. The wet, would make it slip easier.

Hi
Seems like i have got a similar problem. There is a loud noise when starting the engine from cold, though it goes away within about 5 secs. My mechanic said it was the belt... gets worse in winter/wet as the belt gets stiff then.

My noise doesn't go away though until the engine has warmed up fully - I can be screeching along for a good few miles! Just been out today and it didn't do it at all, it seems to be a cold weather/rain problem. However, the pulleys do appear stiff - it seems like the engine has to labour a bit when starting from cold.
