What front tyres should I consider for a 1st generation SLK 200 (no mods)?

You should use the recommended ones, and specifically they must be the same as the rears. If they aren't, the cruise and possibly ABS won't work properly due to different rolling circumferences.

No, it's not a myth - it happened to me. When I bought the car, the dealer had fitted two front tyres of a different make to the rears, which were original Dunlops. Everything was fine until I wanted to engage cruise. It would work fine until about 65mph, but above that it just would not latch on. I queried it on these pages and the aswer came up - changed the tyres for dunlops and all ws well. No myth - if the on board computer thinks the car is skidding (wheels going at different speeds) it cancels the cruise. QED
