hi everyone, just had new spheres fitted to try to resolve very bumpy suspension and the self leveling not working. £310. spent, result no improvement. returning to my local garage thursday. theory 1. the control valve actuated by a cam on the antiroll bar is not working, how do you test this? theory 2. the hydraulic pump is not working, it is pumping oil into the feed resavoir but my garage says this may be from the power steering side which requires less pushing power than the rear self leveling suspension? can anyone out there throw any light on the situation. from the excellent post on the self levelling sytem the spheres seemed to be the answer, could it be that they still are but have not been fitted properly? what could the fitters have done wrong? the ride quality is terribble, very bumpy, no cushioning at all, when the car is loaded the body goes right down at the rear, self leveling wont lift the car at all. also when the system was working the 6mm oil pipes used to get quite hot, they are now stone cold. any advice will be much appreciated.my local garage are keen and good willed, it's just that they do not appear to have the knowledge of the system, otherwise the car would have been ok when i got it back, may be i did not need the new spheres? my garage said the problem was the spheres and changed them. herbiemercman.

Exactly which pipes have been disturbed on your car? If the flow and return have been confused on the levelling valve, I can imagine that the system wouldn't work, and would just return fluid to the tank.

The valve is quite a simple device - there's not much to go wrong in there.

When the valve moves to the fill position, the fluid should not be being returned to the tank.

Look very carefully at the system digrams, and make absolutely sure the pipes are routed correctly.

hi number cruncher and malcolm, i think the potential for my pipes being incorrectly connected to the slv is high as the junior mechanic took all the pipes off, and the experienced mech, had nothing to make reference to. presumably the pipes going to the back wheels will be obvious one on left of valve and the other on the right, whereas the flow and return pipes would be easy to mix up. without a diagram is it possible for it to be described, eg: the flow goes to top and return to botom etc?. if the pipes are wrong it may be easier to switch them at the front of the car as i do know the valve is difficult to access. the junior mechanics stupidity has cost me circa £500 pluss a great deal of frustration. many thanks for your help. ian. herbiemercman.

It's easy to test the system. Reverse the car up on to some wheel ramps so that you can safely get under the rear of the car. Take the link rod off between the roll bar and the valve and start the engine. Depending on where you move the lever to the car will go up or down.

On the level control valve, if the ports are labelled;

P is pressure from the pump
T is the return back to the tank

S1 and S2 are the connections to the suspension on each side.
