can someone confirm that I can fit some std rear shocks on a W208 CLK 230K which it had the self leveling system.?

How easy / difficult is it? direct replacement?

Just that my local merc dealer had quoted the self leveling rear shocks are £ 331 + vat each and std ones are £ 97 Plus vat each. Where Euros are doing them for just under £ 50 each.

Is Euro car parts the cheapest place to get them or some other factors can offer the similar quality for less?

Its an old car and I don;t need those fancy self leveling device.

Thanks for all

Joe

I do not think that you can just fit standard shock to a hydropnuematic car

The pump has to be removed or disabled and the pipework blanked off. Whats wrong with your old shocks?

the old shocks are knackered bascially, leaked badly and the car has no damp and sits very low now.

I can do the blanking off bit, but what i want to find out most, is if the non self leveling shocks are identical mounting wise , to the self leveling ones.

Anyone know??

Thanks

that is what i thought about the springs., anyway.... but the shocks must have something to do with it if it can be self adjusted up and down..

Feel A bit dippy, ive had that a few times and just though there was a problem with the links!!!:confused:

I have the latest EPC now but for posting quick links the rusky site is handy. when using it, only links after BM halfway down the main page opens, the SA pages are for the old microfisch

Thanks, got the link working and checked on the parts.

So back to the question, does anyone know if I can just fit std rear shocks and forget about the self leveling shocks completely?

Also, can someone confirm the reservoir is under the bonnet? Does the system run independently?

Thank you

not sure if your set up is the same as my car, 97. e300. td. est. with sls. but the sls operating mechanism should be the same, if it is then the shocks are not shocks they are hydraulic rams. there is an excellent post on this system. again not from experience but just weighing up the engineering logic, if you change your springs as malcolm suggested and then fitted suitably sized standard shock absorbers in place of the hyd. rams, blank off the sls pipes, i cannot see why this would not work. somone in the club may have allready carried out the conversion? i have just spent £1,000 refurbishing my sls system, on a 7 seat est, the sls is a great asset, very cushioned ride with the hydro / gas filled spheres taking all the bumps out.good luck. herbiemercman.

I think you could assume it's not a straight swop. I suspect you'd have to replace the springs & top mounts. In theory you could find out by comparing the part numbers for your car and a non-SLS car of the same vintage

Have you phoned around the breakers for a price on the SLS legs? Normally it's simpler (and, I suspect, cheaper) to repair the original system than to replace it

This is assuming that the legs are in fact leaking and that the fluid is not coming from elsewhere

DONT BOTHER REPLACING HYDRAULIC SUSPENSION DAMPERS WITH STANDARD SHOCKERS !!!!!
I did it once on an old W124 200te, and the ride was so bad afterwards that i ended up just scrapping the car (that's back about a year ago when there was actually some value in scrap).
If it's designed to have hydraulic suspension fitted then its not going to work properly with standard suspension
