I have a 2001 mercedes coupe 200 which I bought and love to bits. I have a mojor problem with the gearbox and the dreaded transmisson fault go to workshop message. I went to a non authorised merc specialist who ran the car on the computer system but all to no avail. I can not get auto on the
box and have to bring the revs up to 3000 before the car jumps into gear and then do the same for 2nd 3rd etc, usually the car will not go to 4th in manual.
Then then If I try going to automatic a few times I might just get lucky and can drive maybe 50 miles before it might just drop back into manual again.

Any help would be most appreciated as I am like a lamb being led to the slaughter when it comes to engines.

Cheers:cool:

firstly, sorry but I don't know much about these boxes. However, I am always surprised when someone comes on saying that a specialist has looked but the fault is unresolved. Perhaps I am naive but just as when a client brings me a database problem, it becomes MY problem until I can provide an adequate solution, so in most cases, I would expect a specialist to take ownership of the issue. OK - on intermittent faults it's tricky but yours is all of the time. He can drive it, test it and try things out until he gets to the bottom of it. If your garage can't or won't fix it, he has no right to call himself an "MB specialist" IMO!
I simply throw them the keys and say "let me have it back when it's right" (after securing a loan car obviously!). Never failed yet, but do avoid the dealer. Boy can they charge for such issues!

I left my car with this specialist before for a B serice and he was expensive but the car felt tighter etc so when this happened I went stright to the same guy as the official local merc dealer are a joke with 14 weeks waiting time for a service. I am most probably going to head back to Newgate where I purchased the car from as they are very good and an official MB centre but half a day from me.
Thanks for your help, if anyone else can throw some light on this I would be most grateful.

Cheers

I think this is actually the same box as the Sprintshift one in my van? another user called Psmart has one in a C class and he may be able to shed some light on your problems if he sees this. The only time I have had trouble selecting gears was once when the weather started to turn cooler. In the mornings I couldn't get it out of neutral unless I revved the engine up for about 30 seconds. Mercedes changed the hydraulic pressure pump and this seemed to sort the problem so maybe cold, thicker oil and a lazy pump meant insufficient pressure to operate the solenoids/actuators. Why revving made a differance I don't know as it is an electric pump but maybe the slightly higher alternator output did the trick? This is the problem with modern systems, they are so complex. Did your specialist have the genuine STAR diagnostics and did he definitely have the files for your 'rare' gearbox as I think they may have to buy the bits they want to service?

When you open/close the car doors do you sometimes hear the pump running to prime the gearbox and if you do, does it sound ok? It should sound fairly brisk but slowing slightly as it reaches pressure and shuts off (or at least it does on the van.

Hope this is of use, let us know how you get on.

Need the first 6 numbers of the VIN to check this out, there are 3 different gear boxes fitted to the 3 different 202 cars.

Any feedback on this issue?

The car is a standard 6 speed manual with a computer actuated clutch and a modified flywheel. Any problems are down to the computer or its sensor/actuators. Simplest solution, get a diagnostic readout. If this doesnt help, then its suck it and see, unfortunately. Find someone good (or yourself) and logically deduce the problem.
