I recently took my Sl500 into Burton Motor Workshops - Independant Merc Specialists with a rotational noise - turned out to be a n/s front wheel bearing. New one fitted £79.00 Inc V.A.T which I thought was god value considering that on the road test Carl also heard a slight rattle which turned out to be stones caught in the undertrays - didnt charge me for cleaning them out.
Whilst he was looking at the car he noticed that the rear discs looked as if they had overheated at sometime due to an orangey edge rather than the normal rusty. He told me to keep an eye on them - they are getting a bit worn so i got a quote to get them all done in the near future - £180 exc v.a.t for rears inc pads and £160 on the front.
Anyway took car away and 6 miles later back brakes locked up, let them cool down drove 1/2mile and same again. Got car recovered back to Burton and Carl was embarrased/horrified at my experience. To cut a long story short he had the car for a week or so, stripped down the rear brakes found everything in good order so rebuilt them, washed the hydraulic system through and re-bled it did several long road tests and temperature probed the disks to check all was well.
I collected the car and its perfect now and the bill came to ...nothing ! Now that is what service is about - long live the independants !
