The family "fleet" comes up for oil changes soon.
we have Mini F56, Mini R56 Toyota Aygo and of course the "lump" ( ML270)
I already have oil and filter for the Mercedes.
Went on ebay, three filters, 15 lts of shell oil, works out about £140.
Eurocarparts.
Three BOSCH filters and 15 Lts of Shell oil with discounts £75.

Well worth shopping around.

( no labour as i do it myself)

The youths VW has come up to its cambelt replacement time, VW want well over £700.

I have bought a Gates kit complete with pump and everything for £88 on Ebay and a good experienced local garage will fit it for just over £200 they have the tools and done a lot.

Ebay had a 20% discount to get it to this price POCKET20 the seller has 306,000 + feedback so I thought they might be fine.

I wonder.
cars now have CBS (condition based service) If, like me, you like changing oil every 6000 miles, then this is a pain. The new mini has this, and at under 3000 miles its states oil needs changing in 800 miles, so will not get to 4000 miles.
Great for main dealers, more engine services, but i wonder why ?
I know that the service indicator does not stop you driving, but i hate it when the red lights states "change my oil". Is it that new vehicles cannot get to 6000 miles on the same oil.
or have i got it all wrong (i am good at doing that !!)

When I was sailing as Chief Engineer we tested samples of the lub oil in all equipment on board, the nearest to a car engine would be a trunk engine diesel generator running at a constant speed of 900 rpm. We also sent samples of lub oil back to the oil suppler's lab every three months and received a report of all the good, bad and ugly contents of the sample.
If you consider the sump contents could be 1000 litres of lub oil fortifed to resist the suphur content of the HFO they were running on an expensive change, the oil was centrifuged as well as filtered all the time and toppedup with fresh oil as consuption used the stock, this usually maintained the oil as suitable to use, very rare to be told stop and drain all and fill with new oil.
The oil condition report was the criteria for an oil change.
On my old CLK if I need to top up with a litre of new oil the miles to next service increases but I believe newer cars do not use this now but 16000 miles between oil changes is normal for this car and my previous BMW 3.0 Z4.

Buy a service reset tool so you can delete the annoying message and have the oil changed when necessary? I'd be mindful about buying some things from ebay as the risk of counterfeit puts me off. Opie oils aren't too bad on price, neither are eurocarparts as you mentioned.

The carparts job has been affected like many others by Covid.

Some parts plentiful and unsold, odd things little or no stock after closures and supply problems.

That's good. 15 years ago, my Golf GT TDi cost me £250 for cam belt and water pump!
