Is there a way I can reset the service reminding "spanner" warning symbol that appears when starting up my wife's 230SLK or is it a garage job?

Service Reset Tool

Hi Bighouse, MIW615

I assume the 'spanner' hasn't been reset because you've either done the servicing yourself or had someone else do it for you. A dealer or independent would have reset it for you after a service?

You will find other threads in this forum that mention service resetting tools that can be used to 'remove' the spanner. They are relatively inexpensive and commonplace. You should be able to find full details in this forum wrt cost and suppliers. Look on eBay. Obtain one that is compatible with your model.

I have the same problem with my car and would be keen to know how to get rid of it.

Yes it is annoying, I do my own servicing on the 230 so it rarely sees a garage, wouldn't think it's a big thing. I read through the handbook, but couldn't find any reference to it :(

Hi BlackC55

I know it can be reset using a combination of facia controls but where in the manual would I look for the instructions? I cannot recall seeing it. I thought it was omitted because MB don't want owners resetting the indicator themselves, especially if the car hasn't been serviced.

My indie says there are lots of clever things you can do with the facia controls but most owners are unaware of the procedures.

I seem to recall seeing a list of these procedures in this forum, including (I think) resetting ASSYST without a service tool.

It would be wonderful if these "additional functions" could be listed and posted for everyone to see :):)

Found these on e-bay, how do I know which is suitable for my cars, will one of these be suitable for both cars W210062 and W170447, do both my cars have a 38 pin connector, if so where are they located?

Hi MIW615

As you probably know, there are two types of OBD connector used in Mercedes vehicles, a round connector and a D-shaped connector. There are usually two locations: one under the bonnet, lefthandside looking at engine (probably) and inside the car somewhere below the facia in front of the driver. It may be covered by a blanking plug.

I went through the problem of deciding which OBD connector I had in my C230K and the only reliable method is to look for it/them. I spent ages looking through reference documents which offered advice that seemed to conflict with one another. I overlooked the obvious ... take a look!

I have an IPAQ PDA which has Autoenginuity's engine diagnostic software. I bought it with a plugin interface module fitted with the D connector; the older circular connector option wasn't available. Guess what? My car has the round connector. However, I found a D-to-round adapter on ebay so I can now cater for either option.

If you are after purchasing your own resetting tool then I would check with the seller first. I would also check to see if the ASSYST system in your car can be reset using the facia controls as it will save you forking out for a special tool.

Hopefully another member will be able to confirm exactly where your OBD (on-board diagnostic) connectors are and what type: round or D. But don't overlook the obvious.

REGARDS

PS - The sophistication of the Autoenginuity software goes far beyond what the average Merc' owner would ever need and goes some way towards doing what the best-equipped garage can do wrt engine fault diagnostics, except that it all fits in the average pocket (or two). There is a picture of it in this forum.

ALL mb's service indicators are resetable via the cluster/steering wheel controls. No need for a re-set tool.

Phil, thanks for the detailed response, I will get out my torch and seek out and identify the connectors :)

210's have the connector in the engine compartment on the right side under a flap for the fuse box.

170's (depending on age) have either the 38 pin or the 16 pin connector.

16 pin drivers side under dash.

38 pin under bonnet (circular plastic cover with a 13mm nut in the middle)

Thanks for that, ours is a 1998 SLK so would that be a 16 or 38 pin, appreciate your advise

I have a c200 1999 and I have followed the reset procedure as per the handbook regligously but it still will not reset. I seems to accept the commands i.e Turn key to pos 2 and press 0 twice in 1 sec etc. etc. but it does not get rid of the spanner and increasing mileage indication. Any advice ?

Just posted the sequence from the Haynes manual here:

Is that the sequence you are using?
