Just bought my first Merc, I very well-priced E200 Estate, '96. I have loads of history and invoices but nothing about the cam belt. with 89000 on the clock, I'm relieved I don't need to use the car much yet as I assume it will be ripe for replacement! Doesn't look new at least. Car has a fresh MOT and has just been serviced.

I've found it very difficult to establish service intervals, either online or from the owner's manual.

Can anyone help? The price of the car means I've allowed for a belt change.

Many thanks folks

Go and enjoy the car, as you do not have a cam belt, you have a chain that goes on avarage to 150k, you will hear when it is time to change it as it will rattle on start up.

Waves of relief flowing over me ....thought it was just the oil-burners had the chains.
Just to be sure though (look, I'm cheeky...) mine's an e200 estate petrol, '96 on an N plate...with no cam belt, right?
Got a good price, so I guess I'm looking for holes after years of Citroens old and new.
Many many thanks for the speedy responses....who knows, give it a while and I might post a) less embarrassing Qs and b) might even answer a few myself ;-)

I'd expect the rattle to be constant if it were the chain. I'd be looking at cam/ followers. Have you changed the oil recently, may be a bit thick and taking a while to pump the followers up.

If the oil has been changed and your going to all the bother of changing the followers after 125k would it not be good to change the chain also?

This starts to get a bit beyond me to be honest. However, its certainly worth checking the condition of the chain and tensioner if you're stripping the engine and possibly renewing the tensioner but I'm sure there are plenty of 200k+ mercs out there running on their original chains. If you change the chain, you may wish to renew the sprockets too and perhaps other items, it really depends where you draw the line with these things.

The only way to check the chain, is to take rocker cover off and set crank shaft to timing marks. At this point the timming mark on the camshafts should be inline, tha amount out is the wear. Sprockets have roundish tips, if worn they will be sharp.
