service items to give the engine a new life

hi guys,

i have a very willing mechanic who worked with mercs who said (as a favour for helping him) will do some maintance on my car, i was thinking what item would greatly be beneficial? i was thinking the glow plugs as they was last changed 20k+ miles ago and maybe others items people reccomend, to keep my car in tip top condition

my car is a 1998 C250 TD sport manual.

any suggestions? :grin:

Most people hate changing glow plugs, so give it a go.

i reccomend changing the fuel pipes.they gave me a lot of trouble a few months ago.

I'd save the favour till you need it!
I'm a great believer in the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' principle. You can change something with the best of intentions and disturb/ upset something else in the process. Certainly glow plugs are good for a lot more than 20k so you'd be wasting money/effort there. Plus, if they snap, who pays for the strip down and head off etc? I wondered about fuel system seals, but again you could introduce more problems by mucking about with it than you solve fixing a perfectly servicable system. If she's running right, leave well alone IMO and call him when she isn't.

ATF change, and maybe a flush of the coolant? Oil change as well if its needed.

I wouldnt' touch the plugs, they're working fine now so leave them They'll give you plenty of notice of failure and all that will happen is the engine will be a bit more difficult to start in the morning.

thanks guys i just i keep thinking "new is best" if i replaced my glow plugs would i notice a difference in drive?? (just a thought?) also whats ATF sorry not the most technical person here

you won't notice a different in drive with new glowplugs - just an easier start when it's colder. Parrott makes sense - go for the ATF (automatic transmission fuild) change if you do want to notive a difference

sorry guys, is atf used in manuals too? i thought something engine wise would make more difference acceration/ummph etc?

You do not have ATF in a manual, so it would be hard to change. As there is nothing that could improve the performance save the favour for a rainy day as Jberks says,
