Happy New Year !

w210 320 CDI Estate - service indicator has been showing Service A required, until 1200 miles left and now it is Service B is required ?

101K mile - FMBSH

Any ideas of why this has changed, thinking about it, the only service the car has had in a service B every time ?

regards,

How long - timewise - since the last service? I believe the assyst works on a combination of time & miles, not just miles alone. Not sure whether the relatively high mileage may also have something to do with it - I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be able to chip in once the hangovers wear off!

Mine has done exactly the same (w210 320cdi estate 2002 75k mls appr) & has only ever had B services too. Mileage from the last one is around 18K approx 14mths ago.

I can only think it's something to do with the timespan & mileage, but will ask as it's due for a service soon.

The threshold between an "A" and a "B" service is fixed by MB.

My 1999 CLK ASSYST display does not indicate whether the service due is "A" or "B" but the service book mentions:-
"Your MB service station will establish the scope of service required for the distance covered"

followed by:-
"The threshold between an ASSYST service "A" and service "B" is fixed at a mileage(sic) of 22,000km"
This equals 13,750 miles.

This seems to have been built into the ASSYST display in later cars. So it makes sense to know what the threshold is and get the alternating "A" oil change service done in good time BEFORE it becomes a wallet destroying "B" one.

Merc will do a Service A, and tell me why it is wanting a Service B.
Could be the ECU has detected some fault ?
Last service was just over 12 months ago, it was a full B.

2005 C270CDi Avantgarde Estate. Bought 2005, sold 2022.
Mine did this. From new was showing A until about 16000 miles and counting down with about 2000 miles to go. I booked it in for an A service then with about 1200 miles to go it flipped to a B service. I asked the dealer to do an A service and they did, but it came out firmly showing next service as B.

I *think* that one of the reasons is that the car has to have a B service every 2 yrs, so once the car has gone past a year without a service then it will ask for the next service to be a B. Also people who do a lot of miles always seem to need B services.

what do they actually do in a A and B service?

A service is an oil and filter change
B service is an oil and filter change and inspection
mileage or age at each service will determine what other routine maintenance is required ie brake fluid/coolant/plugs etc. mileage and time plus type of driving determine tpye of service required can't remember the protocol, but can recall that, at least on a C class, you are unlikely ever to need an A service.
i would only give an A service if changing the oil early, the car really neeeds checking at least once a year or twice depending upon mileage
