Servicing costs

Being new to having to pay for servicing a Merc (used to have a company one) can anyone let me know what I should be paying for a major service for my recently aquired 1994 C180, I have had 2 quotes both from Merc specialists one is for £360 inc VAT and the other is for £300 inc VAT. Is this the sort of price I should be looking at ?

I have a 6 cyl model E300D which I get serviced by merc specialists.

Normally there are different levels of service required depending on which mileage point you have hit, plus additional items in the back of the book that need doing less often.

I just had a Maintenance Service (the most expensive in my book) which cost £325 but with additional work and parts on top of the service (car is 10 years old after all ) the total cost rose to £480. This is the highest figure I have paid for any service or would expect to pay.

I shopped around recently due to the fact it was no longer convenient to use the guy I had been using. I included a Merc main dealer and 3 merc specialists. Not surprisingly the Merc main dealer was most expensive and the specialists ranged from 50-80% of the main dealer price. I actually believe the specialists do a better job since the dealers have trainees and only get trained on current model range whereas the independents are by definition fully trained and tend to have trained on the older models like mine so know them inside out.

these are my thoughts on the subject , try to get a recommendation for a specialist either through word of mouth or via a forum. Good luck
