Hi,

I have a 2 year old S350d with 8,500 miles on the clock. Very happy with it and plan to keep it 10+ years. It will be used for the occasional longer drive ( 50 - 500 miles) but no more than a total of 4,000 miles per year. Given this low use are there any special consideration I should take into account in caring for and maintaining the car. For example - how often should I get it serviced with a main dealer?

Thanls for your help.

Regards
Steve

I would advise never but that's just me. Find a good Indy. You will get better service, pay half the price, and often be able to speak to the actual person doing the work.

If you have the option, keep it on a battery tender. It will extend the life of the batteries etc.

For a minute there, I thought it was a BMW 335d and was going to report it :p

Alex is spot on. Just ensure it is a good MB indy, preferably one who can update the service book (digital). This way they will use genuine parts and any Warranty will still be valid. You will also have some spare cash in your pocket

If it were me (I know it’s not because you have an expensive and fantastic car :)) I would get the undertrays off and get all the brake lines sprayed by something like ACF50. Maybe do this every couple of years ?
Other than that , keep the drains clear , the wheel arches free of salt and dirt after each winter .

Yes I agree, or get it cleaned and treated with dynax ub, it will never rust again.

Thanks for suggesting Alex. I tend to use ACF50 from the motorcycle world as it’s all I knew.

As for the OP I would still ensure the oil is changed annually and even though I no longer do silly miles since Covid, I’d be luck to see 3,000 miles a year, I still ensure an annual service, at the least consists of the oil and all the filters.

I’ve also heard about ad blue crystallisation. If yours also has this then I understand it’s best to keep the ad blue topped up and then drain and fill it annually to reduce the risk of associated issues.

I also avoid main dealers as too many assume the punter is dumb and the techs are generally not that great. Main dealers are only good for selling crap to people on tick.

Yes, get it treated underneath it saves so much in the future.

It's not too bad an idea under the bonnet as well (sparingly)

The seats may be able to be fed to stop them drying out (With the caveat who knows what is on them from new)

I understand you may have warranty concerns.

@ 4.5k miles pa my servicing regime would be:
- annual oil and filter change
- make sure the car gets a 20 mile run at least once a month to make sure the car has the chance to do a complete DPF regeneration and the Adblue doesn’t get chance to crystallise
- engine air and cabin pollen filters will need replacing due to age rather than actual miles covered so would include them every 4 years
- there is very little to inspect under cars nowadays but as you are keeping the car I would remove the under covers and apply corrosion protection especially on the rear subframe
- auto gearbox will need a fluid flush and new filter every 5 years
- air-con will need a pressure test and coolant/oil refill @ 5-7 years depending on performance
- the annual MoT check pretty much covers everything else
