From experience, unless you have a garage then you need to be either a bachelor or have a very understanding partner in order to allow you to rebuild the engine indoors. I certainly wouldn't fancy doing this on my drive let alone on the side of the street.

Reminds me of an SOS I got from a mate about a year back. He blew his CHG as a result of a trackday. I drove down to help him do the job. The weekend previously he had another mate pop down and make a start so when I turned up late one Friday evening the head was ready to be lifted. Luckily his Mrs was working nights.......so we got cracking with cleaning and rebuilding the head in the spare room. The whole place stunk of break cleaner and oil

My dad recalls visiting his cousin Alec (now a semi retired and very successful mechanical engineer) in the mid sixties. Alec was about 19 at the time, and my dad was about 14. Alec had just bought an early Chevy of some sort, and had the motor stripped in his bedroom!

Both dad and Alec slept on the floor in the living room that night, and my dad couldn't understand why... Until Alec wanted to start assembling the next morning. All the parts (pistons, conrods, crank, cam, rocker shafts, push rods and valves were tucked into bed!!

Now that's molly-coddling if you ask me.

I was rather hoping to see the engine rebuild. Years ago I had a 3 year old cortina and it shot a piston. I stripped the engine out and had the bores matched to a set of oversize pistons. Wasnt a fortune and I really learned a lot about how engines work. It was a complete success.

I have heard this too. One chap fitted a new dishwasher in his kitchen and relegated the old one to the garage as a parts cleaner - now that's a good idea!

Along with the dishwasher tablets - use plenty of washing soda granules, just throw a bag of them in the bottom of the dishwasher and for even better results leave steeping over night in a bucket of washing soda. It is great to be single!!!:)

Our kitchen still has the faint marks on the wall and celling where I used a juice press to compress a hydraulic tappet valve.

Amazing how much oil those things hold :D

Thanks Silver star, I replaced the glow plugs a couple of weeks back so they should be OK.
That glow plug tip shown on your photo for cyl1 looks mashed. You should replace that one at least for the sake of a fiver, otherwise you are giving yourself a nightmare if you ever need to replace it once its all bolted back down.

EDIT: In which case your injector tip would have seen some pieces of piston on extreme close-up too. You would be best to replace it, even a used one would be better than that one, otherwise you might end up putting a hole in your new piston.

Again, thanks everybody for the replies.

I have now obtained a lowish milage 75K bottom end for a couple of hundred quid and have now removed and just about ready to pop it in tomorrow.

The bottom end I took out was a mess and I have only reused the sump after a good clean. Everything else came from the replacement bottom end.

I started another thread to deal with a couple of issues I had removing the engine over the weekend.

http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=109484

Once I've got it back in I'll update this thead once it's all running!!!

A friend had a leaky Norton Commando he decided to rebuild in his flat, gave it some beans and rode it in to his second floor flat.
Everything went in the bath with a gallon of paraffin.
Builtit up over the weekend and rode it out.

Hi All

For anyone who followed this thread the bottom end was replaced with a 60k unit from an E class.

I managed to get it in, on the road, by using 4 ratchet straps on an engine lift so I could manoeuvre the unit without any assistance.

After I installed it I had to remove it as I had put an engine mount on upside down!

I put just the bottom end in and put the head on and dressed the engine with its ancilliaries due to it being easier to handle on my own.

After I was finally about to put the injectors in I realised that two of the injector bolts had snapped off. I don;t know why I didn't notice when I had the head off. I managed to fix these by drilling out 8.3mm and fitting 8mm helicoils. I drilled the clamps to 8mm and they the injectors are holding fine!

The engine is running sweetly at the moment and have left it running for 4 hours on the drive. I have yet to take it for an extended run but so far all looks good!

A couple of pointers. i replaced the engine with a later unit (from an e class) that didn't have a water pass through on the thermostat (no connector pipe). I had to block the hole with a 14mm bolt (or you could buy the correct thermostat) also there was one extra oil drain to the sump that needed blocking.

All OK I think. although I think the turbo may need replacing as I think I detect a bit of screeching - i thought it might do and I have a new one but thought I'd try the old one first as it;s an easy job to replace.

All in it cost me £200 for the block inclusing oil pump, chain etc., £100 to have a black deathed injector milled out. head gasket and 4 valves for cylinder number 1 - £80. Oil and coolant that I had lying around in the garage. £16 for the hire of an engine lift. one used injector £20. However I cannot put a price on my considerable loss of blood, sweat in temperatures of -5 and many many many tears which I expect were the source of the flooding around the cotswolds over the Christmas period!

I've learnt a lot about this engine so if anyone needs any help please post or feel free to PM me!

Thanks everyone for all your help on this an my other related threads. It would not have been possible without the assistance of the forum members.

Cheers!

Paul

My unfettered congratulations on getting to a better place with your engine I think a few of us have been in the same place at some time.
Well done.
