M-B bonded windscreens provide around 35% of the vehicles torsional strength & are designed to support the weight of the car when its on its roof.
Factory approved installation should take circa 6 hours(Curing/environmental).
Recent enquiries to local/national windscreen fitting centres suggest that most use M-B supplied screens or direct from OEM. Auto Windscreens use their own sourced glass but will fit M-B on request.

Replacement necessitates removal of trim/headlining around the screen aperture.Sealing/bonding agent has to be injected in dry conditions & after glass insertion should be left to cure for several hours.

Fitting centre always offer to come to you to replace glass. Franchised dealers, due to sheer numbers, obviously have less experience & are reputed in some cases, to call in the local fitting centre to do the job.

Have you had a replacement windscreen fitted?
Was it successful? Where was it done & by whom?

I had a bad experience with RAC Windscreen as well.
I had my screen changed last summer. The first one they supplied was not an OEM screen. The work carried out to replace the screen was perfect. Everything was clean and tidy. But the problem was the windscreen did not have the same tint as the original one. I asked them to change it to an OEM screen but they refused saying that there is only one type of screen for the car and there is only one part number ( RAC Windscreen part number ). After much arguement, they agreed to order the windscreen from MB but on the condition that they will change it only if the MB screen is different to their own screen.
The screen took 2 weeks to arrive and to their surprise it is different to their screen and then they arranged to have it swapped out.

The second attempt looked fine until I got into the car.
The pillar trim was not clipped into the original place.
The bonding compound was a little bit too thin on the right hand side and the trim rubber was not pressing against the screen but leaving a big gap. This gap made a horrible noise when doing over 60mph. I didn't bother to take it back instead I used some black electrical tape to tape it down.

Hope I don't have to use them again.

Spike, You have my sympathies.I suffered a similar experience some years ago by one of the "Nationals". I offered them media exposure unless it was fitted & returned in pristine condition (prize winning classic car) & they responded well.
My information is direct from M-B.No hearsay just hard facts.

Had my windscreen cracked last year, & had it replaced by RAC windscreen.
Had some older guys there, who were v. polite and looked like they knew what they were doing.

Some trainees were there too, they prolly had a hand in replacing the windscreen. Overall happy wiht the replacement. I drove my car to the place, rather than letting them drive my car to there or do it at my house.
No problems at all

RAC Windscreens in Epsom were good! They were only 10 seconds drive from MB Epsom too!

I had mine replaced by RAC AW last year.

100% satisified apart from the first windscreen they ordered from MB for me - it had no rain sensor in it. Not their problem of course, oh no, MB have your car down as one without a sensor. Hmm, okay.

New screen arrived, they fitted at their depot. Took them about half a day. Brought it back, no problems at all. Nice to hear the technicians say that they loved replacing MB screens - apparently well designed for replacing and straightforward to do.

I am also in process of having my windscreen replaced (ML) and because of this thread am having it carried out via Dealer(Dartford) . However I was surprised that the price of windscreen was (only) £135 :?: . This seems v cheap!!!!!
I also have rain sensing wipers but didn't think the rain sensor was 'in' /part of windscreen? Is it (GregE240) :?: Doesn't it work via some sort of reflected light sensor on dash??

Cheers,

Dieter

The rain sensor is in the pod behind the rear view mirror. It does work on reflected light, but throught he small port in the sun mask behind the mirror.
