weld a bar on the bolt stubs and unwind them

Sounds like a job for your local indie

Nick, sadly the hole is only 20mm in diameter, and it will have broken off 18mm down the hole.

what about an "easy-out"?

a workmate told me about them today. my main two problems are 1)the stiffness of the bolts and 2) lousy access.

I still think these are worth a go. It basically a left hand taper that cuts in. The more pressure you apply, the more grip you get.

There is even a picture of a man using them on a wheel bolt!

go on then Turnip

tell us what they are called, where we get them and how much they cost. they look invaluable.
I used a stud extractor onthe SL steering wheel retaining bolt last year. I had to drill down, tapering the hole as I went from 10mm to about 6mm by the time I'd gone deep enough. The extractor worked fine, so fine in fact that I haven't been able to remove it from the retaining bolt.

Sorry Turnip, I have just seen your earlier post. £19.99 what a bargain. Just think of the saving in skinned knuckles alone. I'm having some.

If you put it in the freezer for 24 hours, then take it out and heat it with a torch, it will come out.

I would recommend a gas blow torch rather than just a torch , AA batteries are good for light but not great at heating things up ;).
If you can get hold of it, freezer spray is great for this kind of thing. It is also very effective at removing chewing gum from clothes.

or I could just be old-fashioned

and put the retaining nut in a vice and apply opposite torque in huge amounts. I haven't needed that extractor since, which is why it is still "involved" with the nut.
I've just ordered those socket things from screwfix, and a shed load of other stuff as well. Curse you Turnip, for making me spend my money again.
I checked the Sealey catalogue ( there's a Machine Mart not far from me), but I couldn't see anything similar.
