Having driven a few tankfuls on both, I reckon BP Ultimate is the better fuel, despite losing out on the odd RON or two to Shell's rebagded effort. Seems to give a smoother and quieter thrum and noticeably more oomph than Shell's V-Power. Any serious testers out there done a comparison yet ..... ?

All the tests I've done have proven to me that it makes no difference at all, and certainly not to the value of the price premium.
I use BP ultimate every 3 tank fulls for the detergent, but both with petrol on my E240 and on my Diesel now, if someone said drive the car and say which it is, I couldn't.
It seems to make some difference on older cars but newer ones seem to compensate IME.

I filled up my E280 124 estate with shell V power and managed a trip from Surrey to Devon and back on one tank. It's never done that before, and the car had a bit more (a tiny bit) pull on the motorway. My driving style was the same as normal, not caning it, just wafting along. I was quite surprised.
On the BMW forum I visit, a car tuner tested these fuels scientifically, and Tesco 99 came out top.

I put BP Ultimate diesel in my TDCi Fiesta and it was certainly quieter, bit it didn't seem to pull as well as usual. I personally find that Shell extra diesel (why its called extra I don't know its the only diesel they sell) the best in my car.

As for the E230 (which is pinking so not well at the moment - must sort it out really...) I haven't noticed any real difference but its mainly used for short journeys and a tank full lasts a couple of weeks. I did try to put V-Power in it last time it was filled up but they had sold out!!

Anyone tried Total 'Excellium'?
