Hi, I have 2012 c220 amg, could you put shop bought veg oil in this model? Say 30% to a full tank of diesel or is it too modern of an engine? Any foreseeable problems etc, I used to put used veg oil on an old 4x4 that I had so I know all about the regs regarding how much you can use etc any help would be greatly appreciated

The bork potential is huge.

You would have to pay Excise Duty see below:

See this paragraph:

4.2.4 Vegetable oil used or unused not set aside as motor or heating fuel

Vegetable oil (unused and used, processed or unprocessed) that is set aside or intended for use, as motor or heating fuel is liable to duty unless the producer is exempt, find out more in paragraph 4.2.1.

Vegetable oil producers and retailers who make and supply their oils for cooking are not liable to register and account for duty on their sales if the oil is subsequently used as, or to produce, motor or heating fuel.

Cooking oil producers and retailers who supply direct to fuel producers and distributors, are not liable for duty unless they have set aside all, or part of their production as motor or heating fuel. This should be clear in the way the product is marketed and invoiced.

In these scenarios it is the fuel producer or distributor who sets the product aside for use as motor or heating fuel, who is liable to register and account for duty.

Isn’t vegetable oil about to be more scarce than diesel?

IIRC as soon as you see Cdi (common rail diesel injection) in the engine description, this sort of thing is a no-no and will damage the engine. I admit I may be wrong, but I know others on here will either confirm or correct!

That's my understanding.
Modern very high pressure pumps don't like veg oil due to the higher viscosity.

I've never quite understood why people try to save a few quid on a fuel which is not subject to testing to a standard given the costs of mechanical failure if it causes an issue.

1.2 Who should read this notice

You should read this notice if you:

  • manufacture biofuels as fuel for any engine, motor or other machinery, or for heating
  • blend biodiesel or bioethanol with other oils
  • manufacture other fuel substitutes and fuel additives
  • use biofuels in the production of electricity

It’s not for home users. Iirc there is a tax & duty free “personal allowance” of 2499 litres of biofuels per annum.

^^^ explicitly this.

The hole that fuel passes through in a modern diesel injector is half the width of the thickness of a human hair. Veggie oil will gum that up. Biodiesel won’t- provided it is made properly.

Saw a short video a few days ago of a bloke in a supermarket car park pouring bottle after bottle of vegetable oil (cooking oil) into the tank of his car. I know pre-Cdi MB cars can use biofuel (refined used cooking oil etc) but not sure that unrefined new cooking oil would work even in a non-Cdi car! Unfortunately I guess we'll never know how that worked out!

It’s only possible to use it on much older than 2012 diesels

OMG, memories of field trips - being driven through Sevenoaks in the college bus and leaning out the window to knock the boaters off the private school kids heads! As for "show us your leg" - enough said!!

We know times are hard and fuel prices have rocketed. But as above no.
I am not poor, but paying at the pumps just hurts, i have taken the opportunity to reflect a bit, look at my health and just started using my bike more.
