This is a somewhat speculative post, I have been starting to wonder about selling on my 190e after it passes its NCT/MOT in April. If I'm lucky I might get about 1500 euro for it. What I'd like to do is upgrade to a post 1990
2.0 8v or maybe a later 16v W124 with an autobox (hey I'm 40!).

Are there any particlaur areas to examine when looking at the old e class?

Mike.

Thoroughly check the front chassis crossmember (under the engine) where the lower suspension arm pivot bolts pass through. You'd have to remove the engine splash guard underneath to check properly. The only point I'm personally aware of apart from the usual but less serious cosmetic rust such as wheel arches.
The W124 was one of the best, and if it's a 2-litre your'e set on - definitely the 16V.
