THE MERC MISSLE
220MPH BRABUS V12 IS THE FASTEST SL EVER
THE number of 200mph cars you can now buy straight off the showroom carpet just gets bigger and bigger.

This week another mental missile joined the list - the Brabus SV12 S Biturbo Roadster. The legendary German tuning firm has ferociously fettled the Mercedes SL600 to kick out a monster 730 horses and nearly 1,000lb/ft of boulder-busting torque. The fastest Merc SL you can buy will now hit 60 in just 3.7seconds and thunder all the way to an insane 220mph. Brabus boffins even say that, if you're mad enough, they'll build you one that can better 230.

The expanded and heavily reworked 6.3-litre V12 has a new twin-turbo system and intercooler, plus tweaked engine mapping. In fact, there's so much power that the torque delivery has had to be electronically limited to stop the gearbox and back axle being ripped out. The massive crossdrilled carbon brake discs are the size of tea trays and have no less than 12 callipers (most cars have two), while the 20-inch wheels are wide enough to roll a cricket pitch.

An aerodynamically-tuned bodykit improves downforce at speed, the yawning front grille reduces frontal lift and the four bazooka exhausts make a noise like the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

The little LEDs under each sill are a nice touch, illuminating the ground for graceful entry and exit. The King Kong of Merc SLs costs £170k and is only available by special order from Brabus.

I drove an SL65 - about 620bhp + 1000nm torque. Although obviously fantastic, I found it too much for the roads around where I live. The traction light was still going at 80MPH in a straight line in the dry, due to too many bumps, it could'nt find traction. OK I was driving it hard but found it difficult to drive sensibly. I think the 55 is actually better. Better balanced & does'nt mind ploding about at walking speed if you want, something the 65 found difficult, or I found difficult doing it!

That was good, I enjoyed that bit of the show. I also found the bit about could not take his Ferrari out or use it as he could not find anywhere to park it, this is almost the same with the SL,I only ever take it to places that I know, sad really but true.

I will stick with the one I got. I did notice that the Brabus still had the SBC brakes.
